Syntactic Cellular Polymers. Syntactic cellular polymer is produced by dispersing rigid, foamed, microscopic particles in a fluid polymer and then stabilizing the system. The particles are generally spheres or microhalloons of phenoHc resin, urea—formaldehyde resin, glass, or siUca, ranging 30—120 lm dia. Commercial microhalloons have densities of approximately 144 kg/m (9 lbs/fT). The fluid polymers used are the usual coating resins, eg, epoxy resin, polyesters, and urea—formaldehyde resin. [Pg.408]

Rigid polyurethane foams were prepared at room temperature using eommercial polyols and polymerie 4,4 -diphenyl methane diisoeyanate, and used to study their reeyeling by aminolysis. The reaction products obtained by treatment with diethylene triamine at 180 C were evaluated as hardeners for epoxy resins. Epoxy resins find a large number of uses because of their remarkable chemical resistance and good adhesion. Epoxy resins are excellent structural adhesives. When properly cured, epoxy resins can yield very tough materials. They are used in industrial floorings, foams, potting materials for electrical insulations, etc. One of the principal constituents in many of the Fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) is an epoxy polymer. [Pg.174]

Foams are commercially produced several ways. Some polymerization processes produce their own foam. Polyurethanes, for example, are very exothermic. When they are formed, if a little water is present, CO2 will be a by-product. As the polymer forms, the CO2 will cause closed cell foam. As another example, a blowing agent can be injected into the molten polymer. The agent will later decompose, giving off a gas when the polymer is heated to melting. Results are presented of experiments undertaken by Gaiker in the manufacture of sandwich panels containing foam cores based on PETP recycled by a solid state polyaddition process developed by M G Ricerche. Panels were produced with glass fibre-reinforced unsaturated polyester and epoxy resin skins, and allthermoplastic panels with PE, PP, PS and glass fibre-reinforced PETP skins were also produced. EVA hot melt adhesives and thermoset adhesives were evaluated in bonding glass fibre-reinforced PETP skins to the foam cores. Chlorinated paraffins, which contain up to 60-70% chlorine, are low in cost and are used as secondary plasticizer in PVC wire and cable insulations. Perchlorobicyclopentadiene has little plasticizing action and is used in polyethylene. Some of the more expensive bromine-containing fire retardants which have been used in the ratio of 5 p.p.h. in polystyrene foam, may be reduced to 0.5 p.p.h. by adding synergists such as peroxides or nitroso compounds. The reaction-type retardants, such as chlorendic acid and anhydride, hydroxy-terminated phosphonated esters, and specific brominated aliphatic esters, are admixed to rigid and flexible polyurethane foams, reinforced polyesters, phenolics, and epoxy resins. [Pg.14]
