The claimed compound of the invention is produced by the reaction of epichloro-hydrin and bisphenol A and was well known in the art and was also known to be useful in the preparation of thermosetting epoxy resins. The claim preamble As a manufacture..., is equivalent to saying As a product of manufacture..., which in turn means that these two claims are compound claims. Although the compound was well known in the literature, it was reported in the context where it made up to 70% to 90% of a complex liquid mixture. According to the applicant s patent application specification, no method had been described that would allow the production of pure 2,2-bis-[(4)-2,3-epoxypropoxyphenyl]propane directly from a reaction mixture. Prior attempts to recover the product of the reaction resulted in, at best, a viscous liquid that adversely affected the usefulness of the product. In contrast to the prior art, applicant s methods resulted in material of sufficient purity that the compound was isolated as a free-flowing, crystalline powder. This material could be easily handled and allegedly could be used to prepare epoxy resins equal or superior to the liquid material prepared previously. [Pg.279]

In contrast to the planar reinforcement, the spatial reinforcement structures were produced in a discontinuous two-stage production process. In a first step, the fabric was coated with thermoset epoxy resin which remains in a so called and still shapeable b-stage . Afterwards, the prepreg-fabric was shaped with two moulds as shown in Fig. 6 (left). The moulds were placed in an oven and the fabrics were cured for 20 min at a temperature of about 180 C, Fig. 6 (right), resulting in an inherently stable reinforcement structure. [Pg.125]

Other differences, both in kind and degree, combine to make the thermosetting resins as a class useful in many industrial applications for which the thermoplastics are chemically unsuited. The thermosetting epoxy resins possess a number of unusually valuable properties immediately amenable to use in the formulation of adhesives, sealing liquids, cold solders, castings, laminates, and coatings. The more important of these properties include ... [Pg.96]

The formation of such grafts must modify the interfacial tension in a similar way to block copolymers, as discussed in chapter 6. The mechanical effect of grafting has been studied by Norton et al. (1995), who looked at the effect on fracture energy of grafting polystyrene with a carboxy end-group at an interface between polystyrene and a thermosetting epoxy resin. The unmodified... [Pg.307]
