Epoxy resins foaming agents

OTHER COMMENTS used as an intermediate in the preparation of polyurethane foams, elastomeric fibers, and polyamides used in industry as a curing agent for epoxy resins and urethane elastomers, and as a corrosion inhibitor for iron useful in the determination of tungsten and sulfates has also been used in the preparation of azo dyes, as a rubber processing chemical, and as an epoxy resin hardening agent. 

Foams are commercially produced several ways. Some polymerization processes produce their own foam. Polyurethanes, for example, are very exothermic. When they are formed, if a little water is present, CO2 will be a by-product. As the polymer forms, the CO2 will cause closed cell foam. As another example, a blowing agent can be injected into the molten polymer. The agent will later decompose, giving off a gas when the polymer is heated to melting. Epoxy resins are expanded into foams this way.

Various nitrogen compounds have found use in corrosion inhibition, as fire-proofing agents for epoxy resins and flame retardants for polyurethane foams. One recent report tells of the use of Mn" chelates of phenanthroline and bipyridyl as contraceptive and antivenereal agents. The antibacterial and antifungal properties of these compounds have long been known. ... 

Diazoaminobenzene (DAB) is one of the first organic blowing agents to find industrial application. Its decomposition point (95°C—150°C) and gas number (115 cm /g) depend on the pH of the medium in acidic media it decomposes at lower temperature and more completely. DAB is used in foaming phenolic and epoxy resins, PVC, rubber and other high poymers.

Phosphoric acid is added to methyl methacrylate in the course of the polymerization as a flame-retardant. Other water-soluble compounds, such as dibasic and monobasic ammonium phosphates, have been applied for a long time, mainly as impregnating agents for wood, textile, and paper while ammonium polyphosphates are used in rigid polyurethane foams, polyesters, epoxy resins, and some reactive coatings. Their commercial names are also included in Table 5.6. 

Among phosphorus-containing additive flame-retardants, phosphates are mostly applied as secondary plasticizers in formulations of flame-retarded plasticized PVC. Other additive agents are admixed with natural and synthetic rubbers, polyester and epoxy resins, polyurethane foams, polystyrenes and polyethylenes, etc.
