Environmental management system standard

EMS the CER states that all BOC businesses are working to implement our international Environmental Management System standards . The intention to work to a recognised EMS is clearly demonstrated, since in 1997 four sites were certified to ISO 14001, and the 1999 annual report states during the year a further seven sites have achieved certification to ISO 14001 . 

With growing concern of environment and sustainability, Imerys has taken an initiative to evaluate the sustainability aspects of the calcium carbonate mineral. lifecycle inventory (LCI) is a key part of the International Environmental Management System standards 14044 2006. This tool is used by companies in the plastics supply chain to understand the environmental impact of raw materials critical for plastics production. LCI analysis of treated ground calcium carbonate compared to base resins was carried out since treated GCC is used to replace some of the resin volume in plastics production. The production of treated GCC was found to have a lower impact on the environment than the production of various resin systems, including PVC, PE, and PP. Raw material and energy use inputs were included in the study, as were environmental emissions to land, air, and water [11].

This model has been structured to fit with the international quality management system standard BS EN ISO 9000 and the equivalent environmental management system standard BS EN ISO 1400F. Applying the OHSAS model therefore offers the opportunity for companies who have opted for the quality management system to integrate environment and health and safety into one comprehensive management process. 

OHSAS 18001 has been developed to be compatible with the ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 14001 (Environmental) management systems standards, in order to facilitate the integration of quality, environmental and occupational health and safety management systems by organisations, should they wish to do so.

International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 14000, Environmental Management Systems. 

ISO 14000 is a series of standards intended to assist in managing the impact of manufactured materials including finished products and original feedstocks. It addresses the need to have one internationally accepted environmental management system that involves cradle to grave responsibility for manufactured materials emphasizing the impact of products, operations, and services on the environment. 

The ISO has also produced a set of quality standards specifically for environmental management. This is the ISO 14000 series. The areas addressed by ISO 14000 are Environmental Management Systems, Environmental Performance Evaluations, Environmental Auditing, Life Cycle Assessment, and Environmental Labeling.

The ISO 14000 series of standards, known informally as Environmental ISO, is a set of generic standards developed by the ISO to provide organizations with a framework for managing the environmental impact of their activities. Environmental disciplines including the basic environmental management system, product labeling, criteria for auditing, and life-cycle assessment are included.

Parallel to the development of ISO 14001 1996 - Environmental Management Systems - several organizations developed guides, draft specifications, and requirements for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMSs). Most of this development has been done by management system registrars with the expectation that an OHSMS be accepted and issued by a national or internationally accredited standards body, that is, International Organization for Standardization (ISO), British Standards, and so on.
