Even today renewable resources play a dominant role as raw materials for surfactants, but only because of the great contribution made by soaps to the production of surfactants. If the soaps are left out of consideration as native surfactants, petrochemistry holds 65-70% of the production of synthetic surfactants [2]. But for the future a further increase of renewable raw materials is expected in surfactant production [3]. The main reason for this development is the superior digestibility in the environment of products produced from natural materials. The future importance of the renewable raw materials becomes evident from the fact that even now new plants are cultivated or plants are modified to obtain an improved yield. A new type of sunflower has been cultivated to obtain a higher proportion of monounsaturated oleic acid compared with doubly unsaturated linoleic acid [4],... [Pg.462]

A newly emerging concern of chemistry is sustainable development, the economical utilization and renewal of resources coupled with hazardous waste reduction and concern for the environment. This sensitive approach to the environment and our planetary inheritance is known colloquially as green chemistry. Where we s think it appropriate to draw your attention to this important development, we dis- I ( play the small icon shown here in the margin. [Pg.29]

Lately, the concern with environment and sustainability has been rising progressively and renewable sources of materials have been increasingly explored. [Pg.61]

NR has endured aU the inventions of synthetic mbbers exceptionally well and still represents nearly one-third of all mbber in the marketplace [2]. The new awareness of our environment gives NR the added advantage of being seen as a renewable source. [Pg.776]

This raises two fundamentally important questions. First, the importance of substituting existing feedstocks and resources by those whose extraction, processing, use and disposal present less of a threat to the environment. Such transmateriahzation is usually associated with the use of renewable feedstocks. The second, more profound, question asks where waste comes from and why it cannot be eliminated altogether. [Pg.7]

Indeed a natural alliance of carbon free technologies - nuclear and renewables - needs to be more active in aligning energy and environment policies, such as advocating all-source regimes. [Pg.55]

Fundamental to the support for nuclear energy is the new attitude in the industry itself. Nuclear electricity producers are adapting well to the onset of competition in the marketplace. We are seeing consolidation, nuclear plant purchases, and the pursuit of license renewals. In this new environment, the U.S. nuclear industry is entertaining something of a renaissance and beginning to take credit for its accomplishments. [Pg.108]

Centralized electrification requires massive amounts of capital [10]. The dispersed nature of houses and low potential demand create little incentive for power companies to provide access to rural areas. In addition, extending the grid may be unrealistic due to transmission line costs or hard terrain [5]. Thus, in rural areas, off-grid and mini-grid solutions make the most sense. Such systems can consist of a single home or several small homes and businesses. The systems can be incremental and scalable and applied to many different conditions and environments [10]. Off-grid and mini-grid options for renewable electricity include solar, wind, clean biomass, and micro-hydro. These options for renewable power will be discussed in more detail below. [Pg.45]
