The nomenclature used in Volume 1 is based on the recommendations of the lUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) for the system of units utilized as well as for their symbols. The reference is entitled,... 

The fiscal system set by the host government determines the method by which the host nation claims its entitlement to income from the production and sale of hydrocarbons. The simplest fiscal system is the tax and royalty scheme, such as that applied to income from production in the UKCS (United Kingdom Continental Shelf). 

The directive entitles the Commission to take, for safety reasons, any appropriate measures with respect to classification of pressure equipment or assemblies. In that task, the Commission is assisted by a standing committee on pressure equipment which is composed of representatives appointed by the Member States and chaired by a representative of tbe Commission. 

This subject is dealt with ab initio in the author s book entitled Elementary Practical Organic Chemiairy. Parti. SmaU Scale Preparations. (Longmans, Green and Co. Ltd., 1957.) The treatment is comprehensive and includes a detailed account of small scale apparatus of novel design. 

The Seetion entitled The BasiC ToolS Of Quantum Mechanics treats the fundamental postulates of quantum meehanies and several applieations to exaetly soluble model problems. These problems inelude the eonventional partiele-in-a-box (in one and more dimensions), rigid-rotor, harmonie oseillator, and one-eleetron hydrogenie atomie orbitals. The eoneept of the Bom-Oppenheimer separation of eleetronie and vibration-rotation motions is introdueed here. Moreover, the vibrational and rotational energies, states, and wavefunetions of diatomie, linear polyatomie and non-linear polyatomie moleeules are diseussed here at an introduetory level. This seetion also introduees the variational method and perturbation theory as tools that are used to deal with problems that ean not be solved exaetly. 

The controversy seemed then to be closed. In 1890 Hantzsch had already started his work on the structure of oximes, and his synthetic work on heterocycles was practically ended. However, 27 years later, in July 1919, Tcherniac published a new paper entitled TTiiocyanoacetone and its derivatives as isomerides (33), where, after the description of improved and generalized methods for the preparation of thiocyanoacetone he came to the explosive conclusion that the substance which has been known since 1887 as hydroxymethylthiazole is not a thiazole at all. It might be called 2-imino-4-methylthioxole, but for the sake of simplicity, and in view of the now proved existence of two other isomerides of thiocyanoacetone, it seems preferable to adopt the generic... 

The first empirical and qualitative approach to the electronic structure of thiazole appeared in 1931 in a paper entitled Aspects of the chemistry of the thiazole group (115). In this historical review. Hunter showed the technical importance of the group, especially of the benzothiazole derivatives, and correlated the observed reactivity with the mobility of the electronic system. In 1943, Jensen et al. (116) explained the low value observed for the dipole moment of thiazole (1.64D in benzene) by the small contribution of the polar-limiting structures and thus by an essentially dienic character of the v system of thiazole. The first theoretical calculation of the electronic structure of thiazole. benzothiazole, and their methyl derivatives was performed by Pullman and Metzger using the Huckel method (5, 6, 8).

Watson and Crick published their work in a pa per entitled A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid in the British journal A/ature on April 25 1953 In addition to being one of the most important pa pers of the twentieth century it is also remembered for one brief sentence appearing near the end... 

The changes, however, are both numerous and significant. First of all, there is a change in the organization of the subject matter. For example, material formerly contained in the section entitled Analytical Chemistry is now grouped by operational categories spectroscopy electrolytes, electromotive force, and chemical equilibrium and practical laboratory information. Polymers, rubbers, fats, oils, and waxes constitute a large independent section. 

A manual entitled Reporting Physisorption Data for Gas/Solid Systems with Special Reference to the Determination of Surface Area and Porosity has been prepared as a provisional publication by Commission 1.6 of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (lUPAC). The purpose of the manual is to draw attention to problems involved in reporting physisorption data and to provide guidance on the evaluation and interpretation of isotherm data. The general conclusions and recommendations are very similar to those contained in Chapter 6. 

These examples are taken from a series of articles, entitled the Analytical Approach, which has appeared as a regular feature in the journal Analytical Chemistry since 1974. 

In this article, mainly monoallyl compounds are described. DiaHyl and triaHyl compounds used as monomers are covered in the article entitled Allyl MONOMERS AND POLYMERS and also in the hterature (36,37). 

AH discussion of the post-1965 era must begin with the Restatement (Second) of Torts, Section 402A. The person responsible for this section was Dean William Prosser, who became the reporter for American Law Institute s Restatement (Second) of Torts at a time when change was on the horizon in the field of products HabiUty. His initiative in drafting Section 402A provided the courts with a ready-made formulation for the adoption of strict tort HabiUty. Entitled "Special Liabihty of Seller of Product for Physical Harm to the User or Consumer," Section 402A reads as follows ... 

Scrap from municipal refuse may be in the form of source-separated steel cans, a mixed ferrous fraction, metal magnetically separated from mixed waste or incinerator ash, and C D debris. An ASTM specification (E1134-86) was developed in 1991 for source-separated steel cans. The Steel Recycling Institute has a descriptive steel can specification entitled "Steel Can Scrap Specifications". PubHshed standards for municipal ferrous scrap also include ASTM E701-80, which defines chemical and physical test methods, and ASTM E702-85 which covers the chemical and physical requirements of ferrous scrap for several scrap-consurning industries. 

To receive a filing date, an appHcation made on the basis of intent-to-use must include "a claim of bona fide intention to use the mark in commerce," a description of the goods upon or in connection with which the appHcant has the intention to use the mark and the mode and manner in which it is to be used, and a statement that the appHcant is entitled to use the mark and that, to the best of the appHcant s knowledge, no other person or entity has the right to use the mark or a confusingly similar mark. A drawing of the mark must be submitted with the appHcation. 

Maintenance hemodialysis has grown and expanded beyond the expectations of even the most enthusiastic of its eadiest proponents. Figure 7 is a plot of the overall estimated dialysis population by year siace 1970. The population at the end of 1992 exceeded 475,000 another 500,000 patients or so have received therapy at one time but have siace died or had transplants. Maintenance dialysis is now available to some extent ia all but the poorest nations ia economically advanced countries, excepting the United Kingdom, it is rendered as a virtual entitlement. The current worldwide mean cost of a single dialysis patient is about 30,000 per year (47) the aggregate economic magnitude of the medical appHcation of hemodialysis thus approaches 15 biUion.

Humid volumes are given by the curves entitled Volume mVkg diy air. The volumes are plotted as func tions of absolute humidity and temperature. The difference between dry-air specific volume and humid-air volume at a given temperature is the volume of water vapor. 

Feed analyses in terms of component concentrations are usually not available for complex hydrocarbon mixtures with a final normal boihng point above about 38°C (100°F) (/i-pentane). One method of haudhug such a feed is to break it down into pseudo components (narrow-boihng fractions) and then estimate the mole fraction and value for each such component. Edmister [2nd. Eng. Chem., 47,1685 (1955)] and Maxwell (Data Book on Hydrocarbons, Van Nostrand, Princeton, N.J., 1958) give charts that are useful for this estimation. Once values are available, the calculation proceeds as described above for multicomponent mixtures. Another approach to complex mixtures is to obtain an American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) or true-boihng point (TBP) cui ve for the mixture and then use empirical correlations to con-strucl the atmospheric-pressure eqiiihbrium-flash cui ve (EF 0, which can then be corrected to the desired operating pressure. A discussion of this method and the necessary charts are presented in a later subsection entitled Tetroleum and Complex-Mixture Distillation. ... 

Additionally, the EPA pubhshes a newsletter entitled Pollution Prevention News that contains information including EPA news, technologies, program updates, and case studies. The EPA s Risk Reduction Engineering Laboratoiy and the Center for Environmental Research Information has pubhshed several guidance documents, developed in cooperation with the California Department of Health Services. The manuals supplement generic waste reduction information presented in the EPA s Waste Minimization Opportunity Assessment Manual (Ref. 9).

Mists of high-flash-point liquids may be flammable the lowei flammable limit (LFL) of fine mists and accompanying vapor is about 48 g/m of air, basis 0°C and 1 atm (0.048 oz/fP).
