Strength of material refers to the structural engineering analysis of a part to determine its strength properties. There is also the important empirical approach that is based on experience and observations rather than theory. The basic optimization design theory can be related to the systematic activity necessary, from the identification of the market/ user need, to the selling of the successful product to satisfy that need. It is an activity that encompasses product, process, people and organization. [Pg.58]

In solution polymerization, monomers mix and react while dissolved in a suitable solvent or a liquid monomer under high pressure (as in the case of the manufacture of polypropylene). The solvent dilutes the monomers which helps control the polymerization rate through concentration effects. The solvent also acts as a heat sink and heat transfer agent which helps cool the locale in which polymerization occurs. A drawback to solution processes is that the solvent can sometimes be incorporated into the growing chain if it participates in a chain transfer reaction. Polymer engineers optimize the solvent to avoid this effect. An example of a polymer made via solution polymerization is poly(tetrafluoroethylene), which is better knoivn by its trade name Teflon . This commonly used commercial polymer utilizes water as the solvent during the polymerization process,... [Pg.55]

From the conceptual descriptions as well as algorithmic details iven above, it is clear that NLP solvers are complex algorithms that ave required considerable research and development to turn them into reliable and efficient software tools. Practitioners who are confronted with engineering optimization problems should therefore leverage these efforts, rather than write their own codes. Table 3-4 presents a sampling of available NLP codes that represent the above classifications. Much more information on these and other codes can be found on the NEOS server (www-neos.mcs.anl.gov) and the NEOS Software Guide http /Avww-fp.mcs.anl.gov/otc/Guide2SoftwareGuide. [Pg.64]

However, the engineering optimization of the equipment and of the processes is also very important, that is, all auxiliary pieces of equipment must be properly designed or selected in order to minimize parasitic costs if not properly selected, auxiliary equipment costs can contribute strongly to the total cost. [Pg.500]
