CPE IX, held in September 1993 in Alexandria, Cairo/Luxor, Egypt, was a joint conference with EPA/U.S. AID S Fourth International Symposium on Industry in the Developing World. This included a workshop on industrial pollution prevention and clean technologies, and other cooperation and institutional issues. Participants were comprised of a multi-disciplined technical group from 27 countries.

Technical knowledge and experience—including know-how , those good, practical skills, but importantly also the know-why , a sound understanding of STEM theory behind practice ... 

Specifically, this volume Intends to help the reader to understand the major technical and business considerations which make up each part of the life of a typical oil or gas field, and to demonstrate the link between the many disciplines involved. 

Once the record of invention has been written, an evaluation of the invention should be undertaken. A careful evaluation of the record of invention is usually best completed by a committee of individuals from technical, commercial, and legal disciplines. It is important to include the viewpoint of those scientists working in the field, those commercial or sales people who will be responsible for selling any products which stem from the invention, and those individuals who may be able to offer a legal opinion given the insights of commercial and scientific personnel.

Often the authors set their own ground rules in a probably futile attempt to satisfy the inquisitiveness of those from another technical discipline in an expeditious manner, and yet not to incur the criticism of those highly knowledgeable in the subject area. The writers have followed this important but perilous course. 

In the water treatment industry, the first line of service providers has always been the vendor s technical sales representatives, who, for the most part, are chemists, engineers, microbiologists, or similarly trained people. The field representatives typically rely on a combination of their primary disciplines and a depth of water treatment problem-solving... 

These challenges are critical to the profession of chemical engineering, the chemical industry, and our country. Risk assessment and management involve input from a multitude of different disciplines. The methodology is rapidly changing and extremely complex and reqrrires both technical input and input from professionals with expertise in legal, economic, judicial, medical, regrrlatory, and public perception issues. 

As suggestions for the future, the following are opportunities for materials chemistry training. My suggestions certainly are not specific to materials chemistry but should be germane to other technical disciplines that train students for industrial careers.
