Emulsifiers emulsion paints

Poly(vinyl acetate) is too soft and shows excessive cold flow for use in moulded plastics. This is no doubt associated with the fact that the glass transition temperature of 28°C is little above the usual ambient temperatures and in fact in many places at various times the glass temperature may be the lower. It has a density of 1.19 g/cm and a refractive index of 1.47. Commercial polymers are atactic and, since they do not crystallise, transparent (if free from emulsifier). They are successfully used in emulsion paints, as adhesives for textiles, paper and wood, as a sizing material and as a permanent starch . A number of grades are supplied by manufacturers which differ in molecular weight and in the nature of comonomers (e.g. vinyl maleate) which are commonly used (see Section 14.4.4)... [Pg.389]

Because of the widespread applications of surface chemistry, practically all industries, knowingly or otherwise, make use of the principles of surface chemistry. Countless cosmetic and pharmaceutical products are emulsions—lotions, creams, ointments, suppositories, etc. Food emulsions include milk, margarine, salad dressings and sauces. Adhesive emulsions, emulsion paints, self-polishing waxes, waterless hand cleaners and emulsifiable insecticide concentrates are commonplace examples of emulsions, which fall within the province of surface chemistry. Other products winch function in accordance with the principles of smface chemistry include detergents of every variety, fabric softeners, antistatic agents, mold releases, dispersants and flocculants. [Pg.1581]

Silicone resin emulsions. With the aid of suitable emulsifiers and stabilisers, insoluble silicone resins can be converted into water-soluble emulsions and can be diluted with water. Such emulsions are used as water-repellent additives for plaster or silicate emulsion paints as well as for the surface treatment of mineral powders such as perlite, aerated concrete granules, and so on. [Pg.151]

Use Emulsifying agent for fluid water-in-oil emulsions for the manufacture of furniture and automobile polish, water-emulsion paints, agricultural sprays. [Pg.428]

Use Emulsifying agent, drycleaning soaps, soluble textile oils, wax removers, metal-cutting oils, cosmetics, emulsion paints, plasticizers, insecticides. [Pg.714]

Products and Uses A thickening agent in detergents, soaps, dietetic foods, ice cream, emulsion paints, cosmetics (toothpaste, hair products, blusher, shaving creams), laxatives, and antacids as an emulsifier, stabilizer, and foaming agent. [Pg.83]

Auxiliaries. Dispersants ensure that the individual particles in the emulsion paint do not combine to form agglomerates. Protective colloids and emulsifiers are used during emulsion polymerization to ensure that small polymer spheres are formed in the aqueous phase but do not fuse together. They influence film formation of the emulsion paint and can cause foaming. Protective colloids include polyfvinyl alcohols) and cellulose ethers. Emulsifiers include anionic and nonionic surfactants. [Pg.127]

During the production and transportation of emulsion paints the dispersants and emulsifiers cause foaming which leads to the undesirable formation of craters and pores in the coating film. Defoamers reduce the surface tension of the liquid to such an extent that the air bubbles in the foam collapse. They include silicone oils, waxes, fatty acids, if necessary on a solid carrier, e.g., on silicates. The defoamers are formulated in an auxiliary liquid (e.g., mineral oil, silicone oil, or glycol). [Pg.127]
