Embryonated chicken eggs

Influenza vaccine viruses are propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The virus-containing extra-embryonic fluid is harvested, purified, and inactivated with formalin. Inactivated flu vaccine is produced either as whole virus vaccine or ether-disrupted split or subunit preparations. However, many other new or modified influenza vaccines are already available or are expected to appear in the near future, for example vaccines containing new adjuvants, live attenuated vaccines, and vaccines administered by alternative routes. [Pg.1753]

Influenza vims strain A/HKx31 was propagated in embryonated chicken eggs. The influenza virus titer ranged from 1 x lo to 1 x lo EID50 as determined by hemagglutination assay with chicken red blood cells. Influenza... [Pg.102]

Figure 3 HPSEC of a Triton X-100 extract ot purified Sendai and Newcastle disease virions. Virus was grown in 10-day-old embryonated chicken eggs and purified and extracted as described [5]. A TSK 4000SW (600 x 7.5 mm ID) column was eiuted with 50 mM sodium phosphate, pH 6.5, containing 0.1% SDS. Samples were boiled for 2 min in 4% SDS prior to chromatography. The flow rate was 1 mL/min and the absorbance was monitored at 280 nm. 1, Tetramer of the hemagglutinin neuraminidase (HN) protein of Sendai virus 2, dimer of HN 3, Sendai virus fusion protein F , Triton X-100. Lysozyme has been isolated from bovine and canine cartilages and from canine sera by a variety of chromatographic procedures, including affinity chromatography on carboxymethylchitin. The composition of the bovine lysozyme is similar to that of other mammalian lysozymes. Anti-(canine lysozyme) antibodies cross-reacted with bovine lysozyme, but with neither hen egg-white lysozyme nor embryonic chicken-cartilage lysozyme. Electron microscopy has shown that lysozyme in canine epiphyseal plates is localized extracellularly, mainly in the vicinity of the chondrocytes. Evidence that lysozyme has a physiological role in normal endochondral calcification has been presented. ... [Pg.375]

Rosner, H., Rahmann, H., Reuter, G., Schauer, R., Peter-Katalinic, J., and Egge, H., 1985a, Mass spectrometric identification of the pentasialoganglioside GPlc of embryonic chicken brain, Biol. Chem. Hoppe-Seyler 366 1177-1181. [Pg.237]

Among the gangliosides, GM4 [ct-NeuAc-(2 — 3)-/ -Gal-(l — 0)-Cer] has a relatively simple chemical structure. It has been detected in human and chicken brain and also (119) as a major ganglioside of mouse erythrocytes, chicken-embryonic liver, and egg yolk. With the help of the azidosphingo-sine glycosylation it has been synthesized very efficiently from the neuraminic acid-containing galactosyl donor 11a-/ (Table XI) (120-122). Similarly the thio isomer was obtained from lib-/ and (120,123) the positional isomer from llc-a. [Pg.58]

Cornell K strain white Leghorn juvenile chickens Embryonic Pb exposure (El 2) 400 pg Pb per egg DTH and cytokine IFN- production by thymocytes Decreased thymocyte production of IFN cytokine and DTH Lee and Dietert (2003)... [Pg.696]

Three studies have noted embryonic Pb immunotoxicity in Cornell K strain white Leghorn chickens. This testing animal model has the virtue of relatively high-throughput exposure studies at a multiplicity of embryonic time windows (Hussain et al., 2005 Lee and Dietert, 2003 Lee et al., 2001). Lead exposure at E12 with 400 xg per egg resulted in decreased production of IFN cytokine and reduced DTH. Chickens exposed to Pb at 5—400 p.g per egg and at E5, E7, E9, or E12 embryological time points showed suppressed IFN and NO production at the first three exposure time points at 5—6 weeks of age. DTH was unaltered. Hussain et al. (2005) evaluated the... [Pg.697]

Subsequently, similar small viruses have been found associated with bovine, avian, and canine adenoviruses (Luchsinger et al., 1970 Dutta and Pomeroy, 1967 Yates et al, 1972 Domoto and Yanagawa, 1969). It would appear that any adenovirus can serve as a helper for AAV infection in any cell which is permissive for the adenovirus. For example, a chicken adenovirus will permit human AAV to productively infect either chick embryo fibroblasts or embryonated eggs (Blacklow et al, 1968). [Pg.2]
