A wide spectrum of process operations is seen in electroplating. Both jig and barrel plating may be carried out in a line plating operation (where the workpiece is moved automatically in a predetermined fashion from one tank to another, including precleaning and postplating operations) or a more flexible (and labour-intensive) vat plating may involve manual movement of the workpiece between the tanks.

Barrel plating (electroplating, PVD technology) Plating objects that are loose inside a rotating grid structure (cage or barrel) so that they are tumbled and completely covaed. See also Fixture. 

The sequence of unit operations in an electroplating operation is very similar when either racks or barrels are used to carry parts. A typical sequence involves various types of cleaning steps, stripping of old plating or paint, the actual electroplating steps, and rinsing steps between and after each of the above operations. 

CuNiAu boards fabricated either with the NiAu as the Cu etch resist or by the SMOBC process followed by electrolessly plating Ni and Au can confer improved PTH reliability. There are two mechanisms for the observed improvement the enhanced rivet effect provided by the Ni and the elimination of Cu dissolution during solder shocks such as wave soldering or PGA rework. For high-aspect-ratio holes, electroless Ni confers an additional benefit because the plating thickness in the barrel is more consistent than for conventional electroplating.
