Floating electrodes

Let the area of the electrode float in each fit. This can account for small errors in diffusion coefficients or concentrations. [Pg.147]

Silicon is prepared commercially by heating silica and carbon in an electric furnace, using carbon electrodes. Several other methods can be used for preparing the element. Amorphous silicon can be prepared as a brown powder, which can be easily melted or vaporized. The Gzochralski process is commonly used to produce single crystals of silicon used for solid-state or semiconductor devices. Hyperpure silicon can be prepared by the thermal decomposition of ultra-pure trichlorosilane in a hydrogen atmosphere, and by a vacuum float zone process. [Pg.33]

ICIFM-21SP Monopolar Electrolyzers. Id s EM-21 SP monopolar electrolyzer incorporates stamped electrodes that are 2 mm thick and of a relatively small (0.2 m ) size (50). The electrolyte compartments are created by molded gaskets between two of the electrode plates the electrode spacing is finite and is estabHshed by gasket thickness. The electrode frames are supported from rails and are compressed between one fixed and one floating end plate by tie rods. Inlet and outlet streams are handled by internal manifolds. A crosscut view of the electrolyzer is shown in Eigure 21. As of 1989, ICI had Hcensed 20 plants having an annual capacity of 468,250 t of NaOH. [Pg.496]

Figure 21-1 shows the object to be protected and the arrangement of impressed current anodes and reference electrodes. A central anode and two ring anodes of platinized titanium wire 3 mm in diameter provided with additional copper wire conductors are installed here. It is worth noting that the central anode is suspended from a float, whereas the ring anode is mounted on plastic supports. The zinc reference electrodes are also on floats near the inner side of the bell, while the 17 reference electrodes are mounted on plastic rods on the bottom of the cup and in the ring... [Pg.468]

Combined influence of both of the above factors significantly limits the performance and operation capability of the NiOx electrodes of agglomerate type in the asymmetric C/NiOx capacitors. Good initial performance may change for accelerated failure either in the floating mode or in heavy duty cycling mode of operation. [Pg.52]

Electrochemical performance of the modified carbons was examined by floating gas diffusion electrode [19] in an electrochemical cell with separated cathode and anode chambers at room temperature with PI-50-1.1 -potentiostat in IN KOH aqueous solution. [Pg.347]

In 1984, the AMPTE mission launched the first carbon-foil TOF-MS into space, which would have been the second, had the Challenger shuttle disaster not delayed the Ulysses launch until 1991 (Fig. 11.2) [23]. The photons were filtered out by a traditional blackened deflection system, which directed the ions toward the 2 p,g/cm2 thick foil mounted on an 85% transparent grid almost a square centimeter in area. The grid provided the support needed to survive the launch. The foil thickness permitted >2keV/nuc ions to pass through and hit a SSD some 10 cm away. To ensure that the ions made it through the foil and also through the dead layer on the SSD (caused by the upper electrode), the foil and the entire TOF section were floated at 20 kV to post-accelerate the ions. Electrons sputtered off the carbon foil became the start, whereas electrons sputtered off the SSD became the stop pulse for the TOF. [Pg.260]

The primary source of error is ground loop currents. This is caused by galvanic errors introduced by small potentials resulting from the ionic liquids and dissimilar metals that the electrode is in contact with in a bioreactor. Additional sources of error are interactions with other electrodes. We have frequently found that a pH electrode not connected to an isolation amplifier that floats the reference can show errors of 1-2 pH units. A simple test is to measure the pH of a buffered solution on-line and off-line to check the accuracy of a measurement. [Pg.422]

Cadmium sulfide particulate films, generated in thicknesses of 300 50 A at arachidic acid (AA) monolayer interfaces, have been characterized in situ by STM under potentiostatic control [644], Electrical contact was made between the tip of the STM, acting as the working electrode (WE), which was in contact with the CdS particulate film floating on aqueous 0.30 M NaCl, and the reference (RE) and counter (CE) electrodes, placed in the subphase (Fig. 112) [644]. A well-defined single-reduction wave at about — 1.15 V was observed. Prolonged exposure to room light shifted the reduction peak to — 0.85 V. Electrical and photoelectrical characterizations have also been performed on Ti-foil-supported, 5000-A-thick CdS particulate films in an electrochemical cell (Fig. 113) [644]. The Ti foil was used as the WE, while the RE and CE were placed into 0.50 M... [Pg.152]

The surface trough was made of Lucite, 45 X 15 X 1.5 cm. and was divided into two compartments of equal size by a septum of Lucite, 1.5 cm. high. Cooling channels for temperature control were milled into the bottom of the trough. The monolayer was spread inside a paraffined mica frame which floated on the water and was firmly positioned by external mounts. The surface tension was measured with a double-hook torsion balance and a sand-blasted platinum Wilhemy plate. A Beckman model G pH meter with standard glass and KC1 electrodes was used to measure pH. [Pg.157]

If this procedure does not disclose the source of the trouble, further investigation will involve closer inspection of the transformer and electrical circuit testing to pinpoint shorting conditions caused at entrance bushings. the electrode, the insulated hangers, or the safety float switch. [Pg.139]
