An electric power substation is a facility that provides a junction between parts of the power grid. The substation s functions, critical for the proper operation of the power system, include the interconnection of power lines from different parts of the system the monitoring and control of system operating conditions and the protection of the power system equipment. 

E/E/PE It represents the control/protection/monitoring system and/or combination of them, based on one or more electrical/electronic/ programmable electronic (E/E/PE) devices including all elements of the system such as power supply, sensor, input/output (I/O), control system, final elements, etc. The terms encompasses hardware, software, and I/O. 

Because the engineered safety features are passive systems or are actuated by the protection and safety monitoring system (with diverse actuation system (DAS) backup), whereas the plant duty systems are electrically powered and actuated by the plant control system (PLS), there is significant diversity between the duty and protection systems. 

Use a break-detection system that is automatically tied into the laser-power interlock loop. Such a system continuously monitors the integrity of the laser fiber path and causes a laser shutdown in the event that fiber integrity is not confirmed. There are different methods of performing such a monitoring function. One simple method is to run an interlock wire loop in the same protective jacket as the fiber, on the theory that both the fiber and the wire would be broken simultaneously. One disadvantage of this method is that it does not directly monitor the laser fiber itself. Another is that it requires an electrical current to be broken, which raises the possibility of other safety hazards. 

The four divisions (guard lines) of the protection and safety monitoring system and its uninterruptible power supply, the electrical penetrations through the containment, portions of the plant control system, the main control room and the remote shutdown workstation are concentrated within the northern section of the Auxiliary Building. A large fire or explosion in this area could render these features imusable for a significant amount of time. Such an event would most likely result in an immediate reactor trip, due to the loss of power and control...
