Refining and Isomerization. Whatever chlorination process is used, the cmde product is separated by distillation. In successive steps, residual butadiene is stripped for recycle, impurities boiling between butadiene (—5° C) and 3,4-dichloto-l-butene [760-23-6] (123°C) are separated and discarded, the 3,4 isomer is produced, and 1,4 isomers (140—150°C) are separated from higher boiling by-products. Distillation is typically carried out continuously at reduced pressure in corrosion-resistant columns. Ferrous materials are avoided because of catalytic effects of dissolved metal as well as unacceptable corrosion rates. Nickel is satisfactory as long as the process streams are kept extremely dry.

Figure 32.27 shows how a centrifugal pump is affected, particularly at low flow rates, and the behavior is typical of conventional centrifugal pumps. The subject of Chap. 6 is boiling in micro-channels. Several aspects of boiling are also considered for conventional size channels and comparison with micro-channels was carried out. Significant differences of ONB in micro-channels have been discussed compared to conventional channels. Effect of dissolved gases on boiling in water and surfactant solution was revealed. Attention was paid on pressure drop and heat transfer, critical heat flux and instabilities during flow boiling in microchannels.

Reagents. Perylene was obtained from Sigma Chemical Company (St. Louis, Missouri). All other PAHs were supplied by Aldrich Chemical Company (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) and were reported to contain less that 3% impurities. All PAHs were used without further purification. Isopropyl ether (99%) for extraction work was also purchased from Aldrich. Hydroquinone, a fluorescent stabilizer present in the ether, was removed prior to solution preparation by rotary evaporation. Fluorometric-grade 1-butanol was supplied by Fisher Scientific Company (Fair Lawn, New Jersey). All solutions for extractions of PAHs were prepared by evaporating portions of a stock cyclohexane solution and diluting to the appropriate volume with isopropyl ether. Fluorescence measurements were performed on 1 10 dilutions of the stock and final organic phase solutions. The effect of dissolved CDx on the fluorescence intensity of the organic phase PAH was minimized by dilution with isopropyl ether.

It is widely considered that the physical properties of dissolved gases affect the sonochemical efficiency. The ratio of specific heats, y = Cp/Cv, the thermal conductivity, and the solubility in water are the important parameters. The effects of dissolved gas on the reduction of Au(III) under ultrasonic irradiation are shown in Fig. 5.6 [29]. It can be seen that the changes in the concentration of Au(III) are strongly dependent on the types of dissolved gas. 

The objective of this chapter is to compile work related to the beginning of sonochemical research and its extension to the aqueous solutions of metal ions. Ultrasound propagation in aqueous salt solutions leads to the hydrolysis, reduction, complexation, decomplexation and crystallization. Such works from different laboratories, along with the effect of dissolved gases on the production of free radicals in water and aqueous solutions upon sonication has been reviewed in this chapter. The generation of turbidity, due to the formation of metal hydroxides and changes in the conductivity of these aqueous solutions, carried out in this laboratory, has also been reported, to give firsthand information of the ultrasound interaction of these solutions.
