Chu and Robinson (2001) and Meier (2005) and Nienow (2006) indicate that high levels of dissolved CO and associated higher osmolality are the main hurdles in scale-up. Indeed, as shown later, much higher dissolved CO levels can be reached in large-scale reactors that do not have (i) adequate means of stripping the CO formed and also (ii) poor gas dispersion. 

Gas dispersion in stirred reactors has been exhaustively discussed in Sections 7A.3 and 7A.4 for two- and three-phase systems, respectively. Therefore, this section will be restricted to the specific requirements of stirred reactors for animal cell culture.
