Effect of Cobalt

Cobalt is invariably present in commercial MH battery electrodes. It tends to increase hydride thermodynamic stability and inhibit corrosion. However, it is also expensive and substantially increases battery costs thus, the substitution of Co by a lower/cost metal is desirable. Willems and Bu.schow [40] attributed reduced corrosion in LaNi j, Co, (jf=l-5) to low V. Sakai et al. [47] noted that LaNi25Co25 was the most durable of a number of substituted LaNij. Co alloys but it also had the lowest storage capacity. [Pg.222]

The results of a. systematic study of the effect of Co in an alloy series corresponding to LaNi43 jCo Mno4Al 3 are shown in Fig. 13 and summarized in Table 6 and graphically in Fig. 14. The correlation between expansion and corrosion is rather weak e.g., even though the H content is unchanged. It is thus likely that corrosion inhibition by Co is also due to a surface effect as with Ce. In this connection Kanda et al. [48] found evidence that Co sup- [Pg.222]

The EXAFS data recorded after exposure to air of the unsupported Co-Mo catalysts with different cobalt content allow one to examine the effect of cobalt. In spite of a great uncertainty in the coordination numbers, the promoted catalysts seem to have a somewhat smaller domain size than the unpromoted catalyst as indicated both by the smaller second shell coordination numbers and by the larger effect of air exposure (i.e., reduced sulfur coordination number in first shell). This influence of cobalt on the domain size may be related to the possibility that cobalt atoms located at edges of M0S2 stabilize the domains towards growth in the basal plane direction. Recent results on C0-M0/AI2O3 catalysts indicate that Co may also have a similar stabilizing effect in supported catalysts (36). [Pg.88]

Experiment 1. Effect of Carbon Catalyst on Oxidation of Cobalt(ll) to Cobalt (III) and Formation of Ethylenediamine and Effect of Cobalt on Formation of Ethylenediamine. Carbon dioxide-free air was bubbled through the reaction mixture. Nine determinations each of the amounts of ammonia volatilized, the ethylenediamine concentration, and the cobalt (II) concentration were made over a period of 18 hours. The results are shown in Figure 1. [Pg.187]

Figure 1 shows the effect of cobalt and activated carbon on the rate of formation of ethylenediamine from N-hydroxy ethylethylenediamine upon aeration of a hot aqueous solution. When both cobalt and carbon are present in the reaction solution, the rate of formation of ethylenediamine is approximately five times greater than when cobalt is present but carbon is absent, and about 19 times greater than when cobalt is absent and carbon is present. [Pg.190]

In the previous experiment, where the effect of cobalt contents on steel tensile strength was researched, we are now trying to find out the effect of three percentile contents of cobalt on this response if each alloy was tempered in each of four furnaces. Twelve alloy batches were divided into three samples each, so that the tensile strength for 36 samples were measured. These values in thousands of PSI for measurements or determinations are shown in Table 2.51. Do the analysis of variance. [Pg.233]
