Education/training workshops

Irene Wilkenfeld is an environmental health consultant, lecturer and writer specializing in issues related to the sick school syndrome. Her consulting company provides in-service training workshops for school districts, educating them about the myriad health hazards in schools and offering efficacious and cost-effective options to detoxify schools. Wilkenfeld also offers phone consultations and personalized research reports to help students, parents and teachers advocate for change and win accommodations. Wilkenfeld is passionate that every school must be a citadel of safety. 

The first step in such a plan is education. Training in the field of oceanography needs to place greater emphasis on analytical quality control, particularly with respect to accuracy to complement the current focus on precision. For those already established in the field (and perhaps entrenched in their ways), national and international meetings should incorporate training courses and workshops. 

Since early 2000, the institute has been convening a series of training workshops and seminars in Moscow and other regions this is an ongoing process. At the faculty level, the notion of academic freedom is often misused to avoid compliance with safety regulations, and faculty members typically cannot be forced to comply with safety rules. Although every chemistry department has faculty members who were educated and trained in Western universities that have higher safety standards, the effect of their training is barely felt. Because safety has very low priority, there is hardly any safety instruction, and there are few training workshops for safety officers for this purpose. 

This program, developed by the Maryland Sea Grant College, partners aquaculture educators with local school systems. Teacher training workshops, a web-based component for data entry, and technical support throughout the school year are key components.

Companies may wish to develop workshops to train potential team members in the inherent safety review process. The workshop can provide background information on inherent safety concepts, the extensive systems required to manage hazardous materials, and information on the inherent safety review process. Videos, problems, examples, and team exercises can be included to enliven the education process. 

A four-year grant from the federal Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program allowed the University of Nebraska and collaborators to plan and implement training from 1993 to 1997 across the North Central Region of the USA. Each workshop was planned and topics chosen by an interdisciplinary team of extension specialists in close consultation with the local educators and non-profit farmer and research groups in states where the workshop would be held. Throughout the workshop presentations and discussions, several participants made suggestions for future research needs and pointed out the funding challenges involved.
