This review will focus on the literature published from 1990 to the middle of 2003. Meanwhile, a certain amount of attention will also be allocated to the electrolytes for lithium batteries to avoid omitting the important progress made in these closely related fields. When selecting references, efforts were made to ensure academic quality as well as ready public accessibility. For this reason, patents, various technical reports, and conference/workshop presentations/ abstracts were avoided to the extent possible. There were exceptions, though, when there was no alternative reference source. Finally, although comprehensive coverage was attempted, it is essentially impossible to cover every aspect in an exhaustive manner. The choice of the references and the organization of the content reflect the personal view of the author only.

Through this workshop the chemical sciences community was given the opportunity not only to hear from colleagues who have lengthy experience with innovation but also to pose questions and discuss their own pressing, innovation-related concerns. Short summaries of the workshop presentations are found below the presentations in their entirety are in the following chapters. 

The articles in this and the previous issue of ACQUAL (Accred Qual Assur 8 10) originate from the Consultative Committee for Amount of Substance (CCQM) Workshop on Traceability held at the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) in April, 2002. Not all of the workshop presentations have been submitted for inclusion in these special issues. However, some articles which were not presented at the workshop but which focus on the same topic have been included. 

Throughout the workshop presentations and discussions, several participants made suggestions for future research needs and pointed out the funding challenges involved. Participants also identified ways to improve education and training in the area of bioinspired chemistry for energy. This chapter highlights those key points. 

The prototypes as well as the general approach and the underlying concepts have not only been discussed with our partners at innotec. Additionally, they have successfully been presented to selected customers of innotec from the German chemical industry. In multiple workshops, presentations and prototype tool demonstrations were given, followed by discussions about further ideas and requirements. We also presented our integration approach at practice-oriented conferences and in corresponding journals [36, 38, 41]. 

These future needs were identified by the committee based on the Workshop presentations. For each need, the presentation from which it was identified is given in parentheses.

I was back in the same plant for a half-day lean workshop presented by their senior lean manager. As part of the event, a plant tour was conducted. 

Final experiments (Table 5.1) were selected with consideration of the local availability of required materials. These experiments were successfully field tested by 60 Kuwaiti high school teachers as part of a three-day Kuwait City workshop, presented in March 2009 under the coordination of the President of the Kuwait Chemical Society, whom I had serendipitously met the previous year at a conference (coincidentally in Bangkok). Case stories of school initiatives and change issues were developed from school reports, workshop presentations, field notes, and interviews with SIS Coordinators. Many of these case stories that have been generated (Tytler Nakos, 2003) illustrate the richness and variety of experiences encouraged by this approach, as well as some of the difficulties associated with implementing change. The initiatives can be organized into four broad types.
