Economic management

The old question, But is it profitable to farm organically will always be with us, at least for those who have not followed organic agriculture closely. [Pg.231]

Klepper ct al. (1977) published one of the first and best-known economic comparisons between organic and conventional farming in the United States of America (USA), with a follow- [Pg.231]

Yield is not the only indicator of farm productivity. Inputs used to deliver those yields should also be considered, and can be in the form of materials, as discussed below, but they may also be in different forms. For example, one way to manage soil fertility and pest problems on organic farms is to employ a different rotation from that on conventional farms where synthetic fertilisers and pesticides can perform those tasks. Because of the difference in rotation, which may also mean a larger diversity of crops, the whole farm needs to be considered when determining productivity and profitability. [Pg.233]

For the farmer, the net profitability of the farm is important (i.e. what is left of the total receipts when all costs have been paid). For the profitability of the farm, the input costs can be as important an issue as the quantity produced and the prices received for the production. [Pg.233]

In many agricultural enterprises, organic farmers may use fewer inputs such as fertilisers and pesticides and sometimes more labour, such as for hand-weeding, than on conventional farms. This is not necessarily the case, as materials to manage nutrients and pests on organic farms such as mineral fertilisers, compost and pheromones can also be costly. [Pg.233]

Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides are essential components of many biochemical molecules, from DNA and RNA to ATP and NAD. In recent years, the pyrimidine and especially the purine metabolism of parasitic helminths have been investigated extensively, mainly because they are different from the pathways in the mammalian host such that they have potential as targets for chemotherapeutic attack. For a review of purine and pyrimidine pathways in parasitic helminths and protozoa, see Berens et al. (1995). Although parasitic helminths do not synthesize purines de novo, but obtain them from the host, they do possess elaborate purine salvage pathways for a more economical management of this resource. Pyrimidines, on the other hand, are synthesized de novo by all parasitic flat-worms studied so far and, as with mammalian... [Pg.403]

Secondly, the persistent high levels of unemployment that characterised Britain in the 1980s and early 1990s have been replaced by low levels of unemployment and high levels of labour force participation. Credit for the success of the British strategy has been attributed to labour market flexibility and adept macro economic management. This chapter more narrowly considers the particular contribution made by activation and redistribution through the tax and benefit system. [Pg.298]
