Ecology, research funding

I had no idea at the time that during my last two years of med school, Harold Wolff was secretly under contract to the CIA. He received funds by way of the Geschicter Foundation and the Human Ecology Fund, front organizations set up to launder money for LSD research. Wolff was only one of many prestigious professors and research pharmacologists partly supported by the CIA in the early 1950s.

EC-funded research has also been developed through the Joint Research Centre s Multi-annual Work Programme (MAWP), embedded into the EU RTD Framework Programme. Several key actions of the MAWP are directly relevant to water policies, e.g. actions related to chemicals in the aquatic enviromnent, ecological water quality, marine ecosystems, the water quality information system, the European Measurement Infrastructure, and policies and human resources for research. 

More focused projects concerned the development of methods for screening in situ, field measurements), as exemplified in Chapter 3.1. Other developments concerned emerging contaminants (Chapter 7.2) and analytical quality assurance (Chapter 8.1). Finally, links among ecological and chemical status, including monitoring elements, have also been studied in the framework of EU-funded research (see Chapter 1.3). 

The favorable ecological properties of CO2, especially when it is used in a closed loop system, are counterbalanced by the effort and expense associated with the use of high-pressure installations. High-pressure operations are more readily realized in large-scale production processes than in university or research laboratories. These suffer not only from an increasing lack of funding, but also... 

Finally, there is no doubt that limited access to this new generation of mass spectrometers will restrict these efforts unless at least a few are devoted to environmental and ecological studies. Most environmental researchers in this field must, like us, share instrument time with others primarily biochemists who are generally much better funded and can thus dominate access. With a commitment to dedicating some of these new technologies to environmental research, the study of organic phosphorus in the environment could indeed become a truly molecular science.
