In addition, Ee protein-1 has at least two noncatalytic roles related to nitrogen fixation, and presumably Ee protein-2 and Ee protein-3 do also. The first function is somehow involved in the early stages of EeMo-cofactor biosynthesis because mutant strains having a deletion in nifil produce neither Ee protein nor EeMo-cofactor, rather only a EeMo-cofactor-deficient apo-MoEe protein (104,105). The fifth component is the stmcture, a material selected for weak absorption for neutrons, and having adequate strength and resistance to corrosion. In thermal reactors, uranium oxide pellets are held and supported by metal tubes, called the cladding. The cladding is composed of zirconium, in the form of an alloy called Zircaloy. Some early reactors used aluminum fast reactors use stainless steel. Additional hardware is required to hold the bundles of fuel rods within a fuel assembly and to support the assembhes that are inserted and removed from the reactor core. The TMP process is similar to the RMP process except that after chip washing, a steaming vessel is inserted to achieve the thermoplasticization of the lignin in the wood. The production of thermomechanical pulps increased dramatically after the introduction of this method in the early 1970s. This conceptual link extends to surfaces that are not so obviously similar in stmcture to molecular species. For example, the early Ziegler catalysts for polymerization of propylene were a-TiCl. Today, supported Ti complexes are used instead (26,57). These catalysts are selective for stereospecific polymerization, giving high yields of isotactic polypropylene from propylene. The catalytic sites are beheved to be located at the edges of TiCl crystals. The surface stmctures have been inferred to incorporate anion vacancies that is, sites where CL ions are not present and where TL" ions are exposed (66). These cations exist in octahedral surroundings, The polymerization has been explained by a mechanism whereby the growing polymer chain and an adsorbed propylene bonded cis to it on the surface undergo an insertion reaction (67). In this respect, there is no essential difference between the explanation of the surface catalyzed polymerization and that catalyzed in solution. [Pg.175]

There is, however, another possible explanation. For relatively weak complexes, as in these cases, a complex other than one of the insertion type may form in solution, for example a charge-transfer complex. An early observation which may indicate the formation of other types of complexes was reported by Bartsch and Juri (1980), but not interpreted the dediazoniation rate for 4-tert-butylbenzenediazonium tetra-fluoroborate in 1,2-dichloroethane decreases by 12% in the presence of one equivalent of 15-crown-5, a host compound which does not form insertion complexes. Kuokkanen and Virtanen (1979) also observed some stabilization towards dediazoniation of 2-toluenediazonium ion by 18-crown-6, even though, for steric reasons, an insertion-type complex is hardly possible in this case. [Pg.300]

Early mutational studies of the Rieske protein from 6ci complexes have been performed with the intention of identifying the ligands of the Rieske cluster. These studies have shown that the four conserved cysteine residues as well as the two conserved histidine residues are essential for the insertion of the [2Fe-2S] cluster (44, 45). Small amounts of a Rieske cluster with altered properties were obtained in Rhodobacter capsulatus when the second cysteine in the cluster binding loop II (Cys 155, corresponding to Cys 160 in the bovine ISF) was replaced by serine (45). The fact that all four cysteine residues are essential in Rieske clusters from be complexes, but that only two cysteines are conserved in Rieske-type clusters, led to the suggestion that the Rieske protein may contain a disulfide bridge the disulfide bridge was finally shown to exist in the X-ray structure (9). [Pg.109]
