E-Procurement

E-procurement is the automation of an organization s procurement processes using web-based applications. It enables widely dispersed buyers and suppliers to interact, and execute purchase transactions. Each step in the procurement process is captured electronically, and all transaction data is routed automatically, reducing the time and cost of procurement. Properly deployed, e-procurement can deliver tremendous value to enterprises in different ways. A procurement platform is shown in Eig. 4.11. 

Three types of catalogs can be conceptualized that address buyer needs. Product catalogs contain data on tangible items such as furniture, equipment, and medical supplies. Service catalogs offer professional service such as maintenance services, temporary personnel services. Commodity-specific catalogs offer specific product families or groups such as chemicals, paper, or other raw materials, and are useful to manufacturers and assemblers.

Pharmacy staff can also order inventory via the Internet, which is termed e-procurement. e-Procurement allows the pharmacy to receive immediate item allocation and order confirmation. These sophisticated systems drastically cut down on the time and effort spent on procurement. Prices can be updated daily or weekly by using electronic invoice transmission, and returns and credits can be completed electronically Invoices are then paid by electronic funds transfer (EFT). 

E-commerce will continue to expand, and direct links to the overall supply chain will enhance procurement of MRO parts/materials and services. E-procurement over the Internet with electronic purchasing is just too cost effective for both buyers and suppliers for it not to become the dominant MRO procurement method. 

Besides the problem of type purity, the same problems apply as to other technical plastics, i.e., procurement of material flow volumes that have to fit the biU as to place, time, and costs. Aging processes and permeation of additives within the polymer material restrict material recycling of technical mbber components to very few special cases.

From a technical perspective, various types of e-procurement can be chosen (for instance, EDI, Internet-based business-to-business (B2B) approaches, and trading networks)... 

E-procurement It involves the use of internet technology to access online ca-taloges, conduct data interchange, and price comparison, perform product evaluations, etc. More importantiy, it is used to exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspect of the business transaction (Pohl et al. 2012 Truman 2011 AUsop et al. 2010).

We have, therefore, chosen one case example of a small enterprise promoting e-procurement and three case examples to illustrate the application of e-supply chain in established businesses and there solutions are not strictly in the buy-side procurement applications.

Naturally, the costs and savings of an e-procurement initiative will vary according to the size and complexity of operations and the assumptions made to calculate them. In a large pharmaceutical organization the company may wish to develop their own e-procurement solution. The investment could include the software cost ( 50,000-1-) and the implementation cost associated with the customization of the software. In such an initiative a traditional return on investment (ROI) approach is appropriate. However, for smaller organizations such as WIBR it appears sensible to use systems such as e-labSHOP where functionalities have been tried, validated and implemented. Each organization will avoid the investment cost and see their purchasing solution customized for them.

Early opportunities were observed in the enabling infrastructures and Internet-based networks (Internet, Intranet and Extranet), replacing existing telephone, fax and EDI networks. The early success of e-procurement vendors (e.g. Commerce One, Ariba, Info Bank) was well received. The old suppliers suffered many problems including that of authorization with no conformity of systems between business partners. It was like having different telephone systems for each of the people to whom you speak. This has been transformed by Trading Portals that interconnect the contents of different supphers and making them usable by all buyers. 

Initially the buy-side application vendors (including Commerce One and Ariba) were driven by pure play solutions for the purchase of MRO (maintenance, repairs and operations) or indirect goods. The huge potential of e-procurement offered up by pure companies has been recognized and seized by established ERP vendors such as SAP and Oracle, and software vendors like Netscape and Datastream.
