This requirement applies to the processes used in product realization, production, installation, and servicing and hence is not intended to be applied to management and procurement processes. 

Included in this element are requirements for purchasing documents (specifications, drawings, and purchase orders), selection of suppliers, inspection and control of received material and record-keeping. For ESH/PSM, this element would focus on those aspects of the procurement process which support purchasing according to regulatory requirements, safety standards, risk management controls, etc.

Supplier Audits are more beneficial if they are conducted as part of the supplier selection and procurement process so that any actions arising can be progressed within a project s implementation. More than one Supplier Audit may be appropriate or necessary for a system where multiple subsystem suppliers or subcontractors are used. The Validation Plan will document which suppliers require and do not require auditing and when these audits should take place. Table 5.2 indicates when Supplier Audits are required. 

Occasionally, as in the case of long delivery items, the Owner initiates the procurement process, (requisitioning, bidding, and even placing of purchase orders) to insure timely completion of a project. Once a contractor is selected, the purchase order will be assigned to the contractor as part of the scope. 

Cost minimization can be considered as the simplest approach and provides the least information it is an evaluation of the costs of alternative approaches that produce the same outcome. In the area of diagnostic testing, it is applicable only to the cost of alternative suppliers of the same test, device, or instrument. It is therefore a technique that is limited to the procurement process where the specifications of the service are already established and the outcomes clearly defined. It might be considered as providing the cost per test, an often quoted parameter that is not, however, a true economic evaluation because it does not identify an outcome except the provision of a test result. 

Electronic factors and the relative lipophilicity of the molecule probably help to determine the affinity of the substrate for the enzyme as well as turnover properties. It is likely that the fundamental instability of the enzyme has hampered progress in the characterization of human liver aldehyde oxidase. At least in animals, the specific activity of the enzyme is quite dependent on the way the tissue is procured, processed, and stored this may lead to considerable intersample variability. Enzyme instability may at least in part explain why aldehyde oxidase activity from different species is so variable (Duley et al. 1985). However, it is likely that in addition to intrinsic differences in stability, the determination of aldehyde oxidase activity for a given substrate in various tissue preparations is dependent on the analytical methodology employed to assay the enzyme and the likelihood of the presence of different forms of the enzyme that possess distinct substrate specificity and kinetic properties (Johns 1967 Beedham 1985).
