Dynamics associated with phase transitions

The possible contributions of the Mossbauer technique to the study of phase transitions has been outlined previously (Shenoy, 1973). Almost all phase transitions cause changes in the lattice dynamics of the crystal and these changes can be studied through measurements of the recoil-free fraction, its anisotropy and the second-order Doppler shift. The phase transition itself is in many cases also observed through changes in the hyperfme interaction parameters. [Pg.232]

Unlike conventional oil and gas reservoirs, structure and stratigraphy often play a secondary role in the accumulation of hydrocarbons within a BCGS, primarily because of the dynamics associated with the abnormal pressure generation (Law 1984a,b, 1985, 1995 Masters 1979, 1984 Nuccio et al. 1992). BCGSs are often not in static capillary equilibrium which is usually manifested by capillary pressure transitions that are more a function of two-phase capillary seals than from structural closure (Iverson 1994 ... [Pg.374]

Enantiomericafly pure PLLA is a semicrystalline polymer with a Tg of 60-70°C and a melting point of about 180°C. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) of PLLA reveals the a-relaxation associated with Tg of the amorphous phase, as a maximum of tan d peak and by loss modulus ( ") curves. The values reported in the literature for the maximum of the tan d peak range from 65 to 72°C, measured at 1 Hz [15-17]. As expected, the T values associated with glass transition of PLLA differ from the data obtained by DSC measurements. Lower values of PLLA Tg, are obtained by loss modulus, E" curves, ranging from 52 to 60°C [16, 18-21]. [Pg.143]

An alternative method to observe dielectric properties is termed thermal stimulated currents (TSC). This method involves polarization of a sample at high temperature (relative to Tg) and quenching to a temperature where depolarization is kineticaUy prevented in the time scale of the experiment. The temperature is then increased and the depolarization current is measured, yielding peak values associated with polymer transitions analogous to t", E" and tan S values obtained by conventional dielectric and dynamic mechanical measurements. The TSC spectra can reveal secondary relaxations, glass transitions and liquid or crystalline phase transitions and hquid crystalhne phase transitions. TSC has been applied to PBT/PC and PA6/ABS blends to study the intermixing of the components of the respective blends [58]. The TSC method is described in several references [59-61]. [Pg.270]

Dynamic phase transitions at the ice surfaces and interfaces occur in association with and in connection with the structures of ice surfaces and interfaces rather than the bulk properties of ice and especially with the dynamic behavior of phase transitions during growing and melting of ice crystals. Consequently, research on ice... [Pg.305]

Then, there are model Hamiltonians. Effectively a model Hamiltonian includes only some effects, in order to focus on those effects. It is generally simpler than the true full Coulomb Hamiltonian, but is made that way to focus on a particular aspect, be it magnetization, Coulomb interaction, diffusion, phase transitions, etc. A good example is the set of model Hamiltonians used to describe the IETS experiment and (more generally) vibronic and vibrational effects in transport junctions. Special models are also used to deal with chirality in molecular transport junctions [42, 43], as well as optical excitation, Raman excitation [44], spin dynamics, and other aspects that go well beyond the simple transport phenomena associated with these systems. [Pg.9]

Sprik et al, 1993 Signorini et al, 1990), a typical example being the orientational disorder associated with NH in NH Br. Detailed simulations have been reported on (NaCN),, t(KCN),t and other mixed alkali halides and alkali cyanides. Other systems studied include potassium and calcium nitrate crystals and their mixtures. The transition from the crystalline to the superionic conductor phase in solid electrolytes has also been successfully investigated. Molecular dynamics studies of Agl were carried out by Parrinello, Rahman Vashishta (1983). LijSO has been investigated by molecular dynamics by Impey et al. (1985). Here, the Li ions become mobile at high temperatures. The ions exhibit orientational disorder and the orientational... [Pg.220]

The statistical theories provide a relatively simple model of chemical reactions, as they bypass the complicated problem of detailed single-particle and quantum mechanical dynamics by introducing probabilistic assumptions. Their applicability is, however, connected with the collisional mechanism of the process in question, too. The statistical phase space theories, associated mostly with the work of Light (in Ref. 6) and Nikitin (see Ref. 17), contain the assumption of a long-lived complex formation and are thus best suited for the description of complex-mode processes. On the other hand, direct character of the process is an implicit dynamical assumption of the transition-state theory. [Pg.266]
