Dry abrasion

Dry abrasive blast cleaning should be used on new steelwork where the main contaminant is mill scale. For heavily rusted and pitted steelwork, increased durability can be obtained by the use of wet abrasive blasting where this is practicable. The water will be more effective in removing the potentially destructive and corrosive soluble iron-corrosion products that form at the bottom of corrosion pits. [Pg.134]

Abrasion-resistant duties may involve abrasion in an aqueous phase or abrasion by dry particulate materials. The selection of the polyurethane type is most important to obtain the best results. Polyester-based polyurethanes perform best in dry abrasion due to their low hysteresis properties and excellent resistance to cut initiation and propagation. However, polyester polyurethanes are susceptible to hydrolytic degradation, and therefore polyether polyurethanes are normally used for aqueous abrasion duties. [Pg.941]

A process has been developed to separate carpet waste using a cold, dry abrasive step [55]. Dry ice pellets are shot into an abrasive zone as a segment of discarded carpet on a conveyor system is stripped apart and disassembled. The dry ice pellets freeze the binder material (usually latex), lowering it to a temperature that makes the binder brittle and easy to break apart. The dry ice pellets sublimate directly into gas without any liquid residues.
