Currently, drug trafficking is a 400-billion-per-year industry in our country and represents 8% of the world s trade. According to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, Americans currently spend 46— 79 billion annually on just two (of many possible) psychoactive drugs cocaine and heroin (Kari Associates, 2004). The Bureau of Justice Statistics (1999) indicates that between 60% and 83 % of the nation s correctional population have used drugs at some point in their lives, roughly twice as many as others in the U.S. population.

Ethanol is frequently consumed with other recreational drugs. Cocaine abuse has resulted in an increase of catastrophic cardiovascular events such as myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, angina pectoris, and sudden death. Many of those so affected also consume ethanol prior to cocaine use. Some antidepressants, notably mazindol and bupropion (3), inhibit the dopamine transporter (DAT) as well as NET or SERT. Cocaine use is relatively rare in the CEECs, but as availability has increased so too have prevalence, trafficking and seizures. Compared with other drugs, cocaine is quite expensive and its use tends to be limited to higher-income brackets. 

Cocaine is a very addictive drug. Cocaine is a stimulant—it directly affects your brain. Cocaine stimulates certain nerve cells in the brain, producing feelings of intense pleasure. Users talk about feeling carefree, or relaxed, or utterly in control. But this artificial stimulation comes with a price tag. The high from cocaine lasts only from five to 20 minutes, and you will need more and more cocaine each time you try to match the feelings of that first, initial experience. Cocaine causes severe mood swings and irritability. 

It is usual to classify as psychotomimetic, substances which produce predominantly psychotic effects in low concentrations. Many other drugs (cocaine, amphetamine and atropine, for instance) have psychotomimetic side effects or are effective psychotomimetics in relatively high doses. They are, therefore, not usually grouped with the psychotomimetic drugs, but since the criteria of psychotomimetic action are rather imprecise, differences of opinion do arise concerning the classification of some of the less active substances. The names and formulae of some of the compounds generally recognized as psychotomimetic are set out in Table 5.6. 

This chapter describes research by an interdisciplinary and international team focused on the preparation and evaluation of some dispersions of nanomatetials having potential application for injection into overdosed humans and to reverse cardiac toxicity by absorbing or binding the toxin. Specifically, the commonly overdosed therapeutics amiodarone, amitriptyline, and bupivacaine, and the illicit drug cocaine, are the deleterious chemicals under consideration for rapid reduction in concentration in blood. 

An interesting recent example (Castiglioni 2006) describes an LC-ESI-MS/MS method for the determination of the illicit drugs cocaine, amphetamines, morphine, cannabinoids, methadone and some of their metabolites in wastewater (both treated and untreated). Quantitation was achieved in the low ng.L range, with overall variability <10%. Cocaine and metabohtes, amphetamines, morphine and metabolites, methadone and its main metabolite, and 11-nor-9-carboxy-A9-tetrahydrocannabinol (the main metabolite of tetrahydro-catmabinol), were aU measured in significant amounts in influents and effluents of two wastewater treatment plants, indicating possible environmental risks to pubhc health. 

The author of this report noted that PCA on the spectra was at first unrevealing, but that, by taking the first derivative of each spectrum (normalized) and uang that as the input data, PCA was effective even with just the first two principal components, which together accounted for 41% of the variance within the data set The next two principal components were not helpful, which is not an uncommon occurrence.
