Pharmaceutical firms have to reexamine their strategies to devise means to increase their drug pipelines for continuous streams of products. The high failure rates of Investigational New Drugs during clinical trials (see Exhibit 5.8) necessitate the development of better assay systems and animal models that correlate closely with human pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. The study of pharmacogenomics will be crucial to address this issue.

Both the quality of decisions made and the quality of subsequent research output is compromised when the available information is not realized. Patent information is often included in other drug information databases. The Merck Index has long included a patent listing for most of the compounds it covers. Patent references are provided in drug pipeline resources such as PharmaProjects, IDdbS, IMS LifeCycle and IMS Patent Focus. The scope of the information varies from the merely anecdotal to the nearly complete. Although these may be excellent places to start a pharmaceutical patent search, please bear in mind that patent data is not always comprehensive in these types of databases. Peptides are also amphiphilic polymers, i.e., mostly positively charged molecules with short amino acid chains, and are a key component of the innate immune system. The focus on amphiphilic polymers is due to some reports suggesting that the current global drug pipeline is woefully inadequate due to bacterial resistance to antibiotics [3]. The application of amphiphilic polymers and their block polymers to stop the microbial growth of infected tissue has been reported in the literature [4].
