Drug delivery supramolecular structures

Host-guest systems made from dendritic materials have potential in the areas of membrane transport and drug delivery [68, 84, 85]. In a recent report [136] Tomalia and coworkers investigated structural aspects of a series of PAM AM bolaamphiphiles (e.g., 50) with a hydrophobic diamino do decane core unit. Fluorescence emission of added dye (nile red) was significantly enhanced in an aqueous medium in the presence of 50 unlike the cases when 51 and 52 were added (Fig. 23). Addition of anion surfactants to this mixture generated supramolecular assemblies which enhanced their ability (ca.by 10-fold) to accommodate nile red (53). Further increase in emission was noted by decreasing the pH from the normal value of 11 for PAMAM dendrimers to 7. At lower pH values the... [Pg.57]

Noncovalent interactions play a special role in synthetic procedures used to assemble various types of supramolecular species. These syntheses rely on the stabilization provided by non-covalent interactions between recognition sites incorporated within precursors. Various types of non-covalent interactions can be used as a recognition motif utilized to guide the synthesis.Targeted synthesis of macro- and supramolecular structures of various sizes, shapes, and functionality has now become possible. Supramolecular chemistry offers incredible applications in various fields such as medicinal chemistry (drug delivery systems),host-guest chemistry, catalysis, and molecular electronics. ... [Pg.152]

Organizational characteristics of surface-active molecules have been studied by several researchers due to their applications in many areas such as personal care, polymerization, catalysis, drug delivery, separation and purification, enhanced oil recovery and lubrication. The structure of supramolecular organized assemblies formed in different solvents, when a critical concentration is exceeded, determines their properties such as solubilization [1-3], catalysis [1,4-6], adsorption [7-11] and flocculation [12,13]. As such, many techniques have been used to determine their structural properties. In this paper, the results obtained using fluorescence probing for properties of assemblies in solution and at solid-liquid interfaces are discussed in detail after a brief review of relevant assemblies formed by them. [Pg.144]

Several comprehensive reviews on polymerizable lipids and supramolecular structures derived from them appeared between 1985 and 2002 [3,25-31], Consequently, this review focuses on developments in this field during 2000-2008. These include synthesis of new types of polymerizable lipids, creation and characterization of novel poly(lipid) membrane systems, and applications of polymerized vesicles and membranes in chemical sensing, separations science, drug delivery, materials biocompatibility, and other fields. [Pg.4]

As in all chemistry, the ultimate goal of supramolecular chemistry is to relate structure to function. Electronic spectroscopy can be valuable on both sides of the game when it comes to the study of CyD inclusion complexes. On one hand, it is of virtually general use in monitoring the formation of complexes by their influence on measured spectra, and is on a par with other techniques in the quantitative study of association equilibria [2-4] this is widely used in pharmaceutical chemistry in the development of drug-delivery technology [5]. On the other hand,... [Pg.277]
