Drug Control Act

Congress passes the Kefauver-FIarris Drug Control Act, a major change in policy that requires drugs approved by the FDA to be both safe and effective. [Pg.108]

As required by the Kefauver-FIarris Drug Control Act, the FDA begins to review drugs approved as safe from 1938 to 1962 to see if they can demonstrate effectiveness as well as safety. [Pg.108]

Estes Kefauver, Democratic senator from Tennessee from 1949 to 1963, and vice presidential candidate in the 1956 election, ffe was known for his concern about the concentration of economic power among corporations and was an early critic of high prices for prescription drugs and the pharmaceutical industry, ffe cosponsored the Drug Control Act of 1962, which required that drugs approved by the FDA be proven both safe and effective. [Pg.121]

Many laws have been enacted over the last century that affect drug distribution and administration. Those included here are the Pure Food and Drug Act Harrison Narcotic Act Pure Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act. These laws control the use of the three categories of drugs in the United States (prescription, nonprescription, and controlled substances). [Pg.5]

Tliis law, passed in 1914, regulated the sale of narcotic drugp. Before the passage of this act, any narcotic could be purchased without a prescription. This law was amended many times. In 1970, the Harrison Narcotic Act was replaced with the passage of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act. [Pg.5]

In 1902 Congress passed the Biologies Control Act, which licensed and regulated the interstate sale of serums and vaccines used to prevent and treat diseases in humans. The effect of this would seem obvious because, after much discussion before the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce, the final result was passage of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act of 1906 [2]. This bill was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 30, 1906 [3]. The Meat... [Pg.627]

Personnel. More than any other area, we are often asked "How many people has your corporation added due to TSCA " I don t know of anyone who has a concise answer to this question. Complicating the situation is the fact that the 1960 s and 1970 s saw a number of environmental and health laws go into effect the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, TSCA, Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, Hazardous Materials Transportation Act, Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, to mention the major ones. This mixture of acts, with some similarities of purpose, developing within a time span of 10-15 years, has made a variety of similar demands. It is not easy at this point to attribute the addition of staff support personnel to an individual law such as TSCA. The same observation is applicable to all corporate resources which have felt the effects of TSCA however, in order to... [Pg.124]

A universally accepted principle of antihypertension therapy is the simultaneous use of several drugs that act on the primary regions controlling arterial blood pressure, and it is generally recommended to use a combination of diuretics, adrenoblockers, angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors, or calcium channel blockers. [Pg.296]

In 1970, in response to a rising level of drug abuse. Congress enacted the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, also known as the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). The Drug Enforcement Administration has categorized controlled substances (based on the CSA) into five different schedules. The five schedules are defined as follows ... [Pg.47]

Pathogenesis of systemic abnormalities during pancreatitis is associated with a high concentration of pancreatic proteases in the blood, which reduce activation of the blood proteolytic systems. Alteration of the balance between proteases and their natural inhibitors is a trigger of endogenous intoxication syndrome, which controls disease severity and the clinical outcome. Therefore, drugs which act as inhibitors of proteases are an important component of a complex treatment of acute pancreatitis. [Pg.281]

Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act (1970) Outlined strict controls in the manufacture, distribution, and prescribing of habit-forming drugs established drug schedules and programs to prevent and treat drug addiction. [Pg.101]

These agents reduce sympathetic outflow from vasomotor centers in the brain stem but allow these centers to retain or even increase their sensitivity to baroreceptor control. Accordingly, the anti hypertensive and toxic actions of these drugs are generally less dependent on posture than are the effects of drugs that act directly on peripheral sympathetic neurons. [Pg.228]
