Drift angle

Drift angle The angle between the axis of the wellbore and the vertical (see Inclination ). 

Surveying shows that the hole drift angle is 22° and direction S36°W. It is desired to turn the hole of 6° to the right and build angle. For this purpose a deflection tool with a dogleg of 3° is used. What is the expected new hole inclination angle What is the required tool direction ... 

It is important to stress that under the described one-channel feedback the drift direction does not depend on the initial orientation o of the spiral. The location 0 of the spiral center and the time delay r completely determine the drift angle 7. Thus, the drift velocity field induced by one-channel feedback control follows from Eq. (9.14) ... 

This drift velocity field is shown in Fig. 9.2 corresponding to r = 0. The constant ip is taken as (/> == —1.8 in accordance with the chosen parameters for the Oregonator model (9.1). The field has rotational symmetry, but the drift angle 7 monotonously increases with the distance z from the detector point. Hence, there is a discrete set of sites along any radial direction, where the drift direction is orthogonal to the radial one i.e.

The visual effects generated in both situations are similar in terms of the amount of angular deflection, although the path of the visual field across the eyes would be quite different. If the insect s body is aligned with the course direction, the flow of the visual field beneath the eyes alternates at an angle relative to the head-body axis that is equal to the drift angle (Marsh et al., 1978).

Similarly, a ship with a drift angle to the channel centerline experiences increased water flow past the hull due to the increased blockage factor and a smaller gap... 

The Delft University of Technology (Delft) has recently completed a limited set of munerical modeling of ship squat for ships sailing with an offset and drift angle to the chaimel centerline. ... 

A panel method was used in the tests for a 6500 TEU Post-Panamax container ship with one draft but a range of offsets and drift angles. The potential flow model includes inertial effects, but no viscosity that will cause vortices and increased squat if included. The modeled ship had Lpp = 302 m, B = 42.9m, T = 14 m, and Cb = 0.67. The canal had W = 300m and h = 16m. The UKC = 2m with offsets of 0 and 20m, and drift angles of 0, 7.5deg and 15deg. 

They found that both offsets and drift angles increase squat, in a quadratic manner. High drift angles should be avoided by using tugs if available. They recommended additional research for a range of ships, channels, UKC, offsets, and drift angles.
