Douglas studies

Douglas study of the mechanisms of failure detection and repair that are employed by human tutors provides some iOuminating information for developers of USs. [Pg.8]

Solid state materials have been studied by nuclear magnetic resonance methods over 30 years. In 1953 Wilson and Pake ) carried out a line shape analysis of a partially crystalline polymer. They noted a spectrum consisting of superimposed broad and narrow lines which they ascribed to rigid crystalline and amorphous material respectively. More recently several books and large articles have reviewed the tremendous developments in this field, particularly including those of McBrierty and Douglas 2) and the Faraday Symposium (1978)3) —on which this introduction is largely based. [Pg.2]

There is some support for a role for free radicals in the pathogenesis of ischaemic colitis from animal studies. Murthy and Qi (1992) used a spin trap to demonstrate increased production of free radicals up to 60 min after reperfusion, whereas Douglas etal. (1989) demonstrated increases in malondialdehyde and conjugated dienes (presumptive measures of lipid peroxidation) in a rat model of ischaemic colitis. There is no data relating to human ischaemic colitis. [Pg.152]

EEG slow waves. The differential EEG and ACh responses to dialysis delivery of AF-DX 116 (M2/M4) versus pirenzepine (M1/M4) supports the conclusion that, in B6 mouse, postsynaptic muscarinic receptors of the Ml subtype form one receptor mechanism by which ACh activates the EEG (Douglas et al, 2002a). The data summarized in Fig. 5.11 provide direct measures of G protein activation in basal forebrain and prefrontal cortex by muscarinic cholinergic receptors (DeMarco et al, 2004). The in vitro data of Fig. 5.11A indicate the presence of functional muscarinic receptors in regions of B6 mouse prefrontal cortex where in vivo microdialysis studies (Douglas et al, 2002a, b) revealed modulation of ACh release and EEG by pre- and postsynaptic muscarinic receptors (Figs. 5.9 and 5.10). [Pg.127]

The phase structure of glasses has a significant effect on their physical properties, which is discussed below with reference to chemical durability. The magnitude of the phase separation can be altered by heat treatment, and enhanced or reduced by the addition of various oxides to the melt. In particular, the addition of alumina to commercial soda-lime-silica glasses reduces the tendency to phase separation, improving chemical resistance (Doremus, 1973). A detailed study of the microstructure of soda-lime-silica glasses has been published by Burnett and Douglas (1970). The control of phase separation in the melt is now commercially important for processes such as the... [Pg.155]

Clearly, the most studied aspect of stimulus-secretion coupling is the requirement for calcium. That Ca ions are essential for many cellular processes has been known since the days of Sidney Ringer [178], The eloquent studies of Douglas and his collaborators [179, 180] and others [181] firmly established the necessity for Ca in exocytotic secretion and set forth the notion that an increase in the level of free intracellular Ca, [Ca2+]j was responsible for initiating exocytosis. Evidence for increases in the level of intracellular free Ca as prerequisite for initiating exocytosis by cell surface stimulation is now available from studies using a variety of systems [181-183]. [Pg.177]

About the same time, Douglas Hartree, along with other members of the informal club for theoretical physics at Cambridge University called the Del-Squared Club, began studying approximate methods to describe many-electron atoms. Hartree developed the method of the self-consistent field, which was improved by Vladimir Fock and Slater in early 1930, so as to incorporate the Pauli principle ab initio.37 Dirac, another Del-Squared member, published a paper in 1929 which focused on the exchange interaction of identical particles. This work became part of what soon became called the Heisenberg-Dirac approach.38... [Pg.252]

Bauschlicher [48] compared a number of approximate approaches for scalar relativistic effects to Douglas-Kroll quasirelativistic CCSD(T) calculations. He found that the ACPF/MTsmall level of theory faithfully reproduces his more rigorous calculations, while the use of non-size extensive approaches like CISD leads to serious errors. For third-row main group systems, studies by the same author [49] indicate that more rigorous approaches may be in order. [Pg.42]

Differences in reactivity between wood species have been observed, which can be attributed to a number of factors. Rowell etal. (1986c) acetylated southern pine and aspen flakes under identical reaction conditions, and found that the softwood species exhibited a higher rate of reaction. Beckers and Militz (1994) performed a pilot-scale study of the acetylation of beech, eucalyptus, poplar, pine, Douglas fir and spruce, finding considerable differences in reactivity between the woods studied. [Pg.48]
