Studies of micellar catalysis of himolecular reactions of uncharged substrates have not been frequent" ". Dougherty and Berg performed a detailed analysis of the kinetics of the reaction of 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrobenzene with aniline in the presence of anionic and nonionic surfactants. Micelles induce increases in the apparent rate constant of this reaction. In contrast, the second-order rate constant for reaction in the micellar pseudophase was observed to be roughly equal to, or even lower than the rate constant in water. 

Continuous emulsion polymerization systems are studied to elucidate reaction mechanisms and to generate the knowledge necessary for the development of commercial continuous processes. Problems encountered with the development of continuous reactor systems and some of the ways of dealing with these problems will be discussed in this paper. Those interested in more detailed information on chemical mechanisms and theoretical models should consult the review papers by Ugelstad and Hansen (1), (kinetics and mechanisms) and by Poehlein and Dougherty (2, (continuous emulsion polymerization).

Second, it was shown that, if the porphyrin-containing tumor so produced was irradiated with a visible (or red) light source of moderate intensity, the photodynamic effect came into operation, and photonecrosis of the tumor ensued.19 Subsequent studies, particularly by Dougherty and his colleagues,20 demonstrated the clinical promise of the technique.

An important aspect concerning catalytically active membrane reactors, is the distribution of the active phase within the membrane system. Modem modification techniques (van Praag et al. 1989, Lin, de Vries and Burggraaf 1989) allow control over the catalyst distribution and preferential deposition of the active phase at different places in the membrane (top layer/support) system. Studies on conventionally used plate-shaped and cylindrically-sha-ped catalytically active pellets (Vayenas and Pavlou 1987a, b, Dougherty and Verykios 1987) have shown that nonuniformly activated catalysts (catalysts with nonuniform distribution of active sites according to a certain profile)...

The highly successful extension of site-directed suppression mutagenesis to a Xenopus oocyte system by the Dougherty and Lester labs discussed above has permitted structural, functional and kinetic studies of ion channels in intact cells [30-32, 62]. Recently, the introduction of residues that allow photochemical proteolysis and photo deprotection of protein side chains has been applied to the study of ion channels. Miller et al. introduced o-nitrobenzyl-pro-tected tyrosines at three positions in the a-subunit of nAChR [62 c]. The o-nitro-benzyl group was then removed photolytically to produce the wild-type residue during the course of a voltage-clamp study, so that time-resolved measurements could be made.
