Plant cells contain a unique family of organelles, the plastids, of which the chloroplast is the prominent example. The shape of the individual ligules (often considered to be the petals) varies, with some being wide at the base and others narrow (oblong), the length being 2.6 to 4 times the width. There may be defects in the flower heads such as in the shape, size, presence of doubles, and various deformities. Thus, for example, the usual process by which a single flower becomes double, is that, instead of filaments and anthers, petals are developed these either show a complete resemblance in form and color to the other leaves of the corolla, or they still carry some visible traces of their origin.

Chromoplasts accumulate the pigments that are responsible for the color of leaves, flower petals, and fruits. Chloroplasts are a type of chromoplast that are specialized to convert light energy into chemical energy.

The reason why double-kernelled peaches and apricots are harmful to people is that the flowers of these trees are properly speaking five-petalled yet if they develop with sixfold (symmetry), twinning will occur. Plants and trees all have the fivefold pattern only the yellow-berry and snowflake crystals are hexagonal. This is one of the principles of Yin and Yang. So if double-kernelled peaches and apricots with an (aberrant) sixfold (symmetry) are harmful, it is because these trees have lost their standard rule.
