Dodecylbenzenesulphonate

Aqueous solutions of sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate (SDBS) were prepared by neutralizing dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid solution with sodium hydroxide solution. 

These preliminary experiments established that systems comprising essentially butadiene, water, sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate and cobalt(III) acetylacetonate were suitable for detailed study. 

Sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate. The material supplied by Marchon Products Ltd under the name "Nansa HS 85/S" was used. This is stated to contain a mixture of sodium alkylbenzenesulphonates, the average chain length of the alkyl group being about twelve carbon atoms. The proportion of active material is said to be about 85%, the remainder comprising approximately 12% of sodium chloride and sulphate, 1% of hydrocarbon oil, and 3% of water. 

Effect of surfactant level. Much of the earlier work on this reaction system was carried out using sodium dodecylbenzene-sulphonate as the surfactant. In the course of experiments which were Intended to investigate the effect upon polymerisation rate of varying the surfactant level, it was discovered that purified sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonates are apparently able to act as initiators of free-radical emulsion polymerisation in the absence of other added Initiating substances. Furthermore, as the results summarised in Figure 5 show, the rate of polymerisation in the absence of added initiator is directly proportional to the concentration of sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate In the aqueous phase.

Their adsorptive capacity for phenol, pentachlorophenol, dodecylbenzenesulphonate, and p-toluenesulphonate were measured [9 ] From these results the carbons J23 and J32 and the reference carbon F 400 (Calgon corporation) were selected to study the adsorption of humic substances. 

Table 5 shows the excellent adsorption characteristics of the home prepared carbons, in comparison with 3 of the 10 commercial carbons tested. The results obtained in the equilibrium adsorption study of phenol, pentachlorophenol, dodecylbenzenesulphonate, and p-toluenesulphonate were discussed in a previous paper [9 ]. Also this study showed a very good performance of the home produced carbons. Based on these results carbon J 23 and J 32 were selected for further research.

Alkyl benzene sulphonates are one of the most important groups of surfactants and detergents. More particularly, lin. dodecylbenzenesulphonate is used as an anionic emulsifier for manufacturing of E-PVC as well as for polymer dispersions, whereas the usage of the branched tetrapropylenebenzene sulphonate, TPS, has been reduced to a very limited number of applications.

Warren et al. [240] have explored some twenty ditferent sulphonates, mostly aromatic, in the preparation of films of polypyrrole as well as poly(3-methylthiophene), from aqueous solution and from acetonitrile solution. Only PPy-/ TS films from an aqueous medium show the splitting of diffraction peaks this is not interpreted further. Rather, the degree of order is estimated from the intensity of the diffraction peak. Benzenesulphonate ranks first in this respect. Dodecylbenzenesulphonate is also effective, and additionally shows a small-angle peak. This suggests that especially alkyl chains are effective in arranging themselves in a domain of hydrophobic character. (Dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid has been found to be an excellent surfactant for polyaniline and to facilitate its processing see Section 6.4.1.) Some of the films give spot patterns in electron diffraction. Warren et al. [240] state, however, that cell data cannot be derived from these.

Among the anionic surfactants the sodium dodecylbenzenesulphonate, sodium sodium oleate sulphate and sodium oleate are the most widely used (Fig. 6.108). The sodium dodecyl-benzene-sulphonate and sodium abietate are very effective and a very low content, about 0.005 % by mass of cement is sufficient to give the air content on the level about 5 %.
