The adsorbent used in this study is Filtrasorb 400 activated carbon obtained from Calgon Corporation, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The adsorbent was sieved and the size fraction 30/35 mesh -particles passing 30 mesh sieve and retained on a 35 mesh sieve -was used in all rate studies. Adsorption equilibrium is independent of particle size, and equilibrium data were obtained with both 30/35 and 60/100 mesh size fractions. The carbon was washed in distilled water to remove fines and leachable material and dried to constant weight at 105°C prior to use. 

A fiber-plastic column, 1 foot in diameter, filled with 12 feet of Calgon Corporation s CPG activated carbon was used to prepare hydrocarbon-free AlCls for a test. This column was used simply because it was available and a much larger diameter column with less height would be designed for a commercial unit. A relatively fast flowrate of 1 gal/min was used in the adsorption column. 

Their adsorptive capacity for phenol, pentachlorophenol, dodecylbenzenesulphonate, and p-toluenesulphonate were measured [9 ] From these results the carbons J23 and J32 and the reference carbon F 400 (Calgon corporation) were selected to study the adsorption of humic substances.

Materials. DADMAC, AMBTAC, and TAMAC monomers were produced internally by Calgon Corporation. The acrylamide monomer, received in bulk, was purchased from American Cyanamid. The MBA used was reaction grade from Aldrich Chemical. All monomers were used as received without further purification.

The last of the radiotracer studies described here is coneemed with the sorption of two polymers from Calgon Corporation, namely Merquat 100 and Merquat 550, on hair (17). Merquat 100 is a DMDAAC homopolymer (mol. wt. 100,000) and Merquat 550 is an aerylamide/DMDAAC copolymer (mol. wt. 500,000).

One of the earliest polycationic polymers was polyethyleneimine (PEI), which was used as a model for studying polycation uptake by hair. This polymer was withdrawn from hair products in the 1970s (for safety reasons). Later, an important class of cellulosic polycationic polymers was introduced with the trade name Polymer JR (Amerchol corporation) and this is widely used for hair conditioning. Other synthetic polycationic polymers from Calgon corporation are Merquat 100 (based on dimethyldiallyl amine chloride) and Merquat 550 (based on acrylamide/ dimthyldiallylamine chloride).
