Dodecyl acetate

The structures of the female produced pheromones of the sugar cane wire worms Melanotus sakishimensis and M. okinawensis look much more like conventional moth pheromones While in the latter species it simply is dodecyl acetate, M. sakishimensis uses a mixture of ( 9,ll)-dodecadienyl butyrate 94 (Scheme 10) and the corresponding hexanoate [192]. 

Tertiary pheromonal blends have been identified in two noctuid moths. The red bollworm, Diparopsis castanea, emits dodecyl acetate, (E)-9-dodecenyl acetate, 11-dodecenyl acetate, and (E)-9,ll-dodecadienyl acetate as a sex pheromone, whereas Spodoptera littoral is utilizes a blend made up of tetradecyl acetate, (E)-9-tetradecenyl acetate, (E)-ll-tetradecenyl acetate, and (Z,E)-9,ll-tetradecadieny1 acetate (89). For both species, the conjugated dienes are the most potent olfactory stimulants. 

An interesting case of geographical variation in sex at-tractant sensitivity was illuminated by Roelofs et aK (97). Females of the fruittree roller, Archips argyrospilus, secrete a sex pheromone containing dodecyl acetate, (Ej- and (ZJ-11-tetradecen-l-ol, and (E)- and (Zj-ll-tetradecenyl acetate. 

However, males from a population in British Columbia responded to a wide range of (Ej- and (Zj-ll-tetradecenyl acetate ratios with dodecyl acetate acting as a synergist, whereas a New York population required a much more precise ratio of isomeric acetates in conjunction with the acetate synergist. Presumably, the New York population of A. argyrospilus has been under greater selective pressure to develop a more precise discriminatory system for the ( )- and (Zj-isomers than the British Columbia population. 

Aliphatic carboxylic esters have been reduced to produce simple primary alcohols (84-92%) via Cp2TiCl2-catalyzed reaction with Bu MgBr. Additionally, hydrosilylation of aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic esters using Ph2SiH2, (EtO)2Si(Me)H, (EtO)3SiH or MeSiO[Si(Me)H—0]nSiMe3 has been used to produce simple primary alcohols (50-100%). In contrast, the photolytic reactions of esters with HSiCb produces ethers. For example, l-dodecyl acetate was converted into l-dodecyl ethyl ether in this way. Competitive deoxygenation complicates ether formation particularly with secondary and tertiary alkyl esters. All these exotic methods have little synthetic merit. 

If the other major product, 13, arises by nucleophilic attack of 14 on 12, it represents, as pointed out by Laughlin (207), an unusual mode of cleavage of a carboxylate ester. A neighboring group effect may be operative. Although elevated temperature (250°) is required for reaction of dodecyl acetate with dimethyl methylphosphonate, cleavage of the carbon-oxygen bond also occurs (207). 

CisHjaOj, Mr 254.41, oil. The typical basic structure of many sexual pheromones of butterflies. Particularly widely distributed are 6-, 8- and 12-, as well as (Z)-9-T. and ( )-11-tetradecenyl acetate. The corresponding fiee alcohols and aldehydes are also known as pheromones. Dodecenyl acetates (C 4Hjt02, Mr 226.36, oil) and dodecyl acetates are also widely distributed. ( -7-Dodecenyl acetate is particularly abundant and is also known as the sexual pheromone of elephants see elephant pheromone.
