As suggested by Beauchamp s group, a female s unlearnt attraction to male-soiled bedding is probably reflecting the rewarding properties of sexual pheromones. To date, the only attempt to demonstrate this hypothesis rendered inconclusive... [Pg.264]

Like other natural reinforcers (water, food, sex -somatosensory genital stimulation, and sweet taste), sexual pheromones should stimulate the neural circuits responsible for reward signaling. Current ideas on the neuroanatomy of reward are based... [Pg.265]

Another way to control the proliferation of insects is to modify their behavior through the use of pheromones, which are volatile organic molecules that insects release to communicate with one another. Each insect species produces its own set of pheromones, some as warning signals and others as sexual attrac-tants. Sexual pheromones synthesized in the laboratory can be used to lure harmful insects to localized insecticide deposits, thereby reducing the need for spraying an entire field, as depicted in Figure 15.34. [Pg.544]

Enantiomerically pure cyclopropanes are a frequent motif in the structure of natural products. Their synthesis is often demanding and many approaches have been made [50, 51]. Porcine pancreatic lipase (PPL) was used for the stereoselective desymmetrization of a cyclopropane dibutanoate (Fig. 2). The asymmetric hydrolysis of the meso compound yielded the corresponding enantiopure alcohol almost quantitatively. The intermediate obtained was successfully applied in the total synthesis of dictyopterenes A and C, sexual pheromones of brown algae [52], and constanolactones (see below) [53]. [Pg.6]

Chemically mediated interactions have important direct and indirect effects on communities from both ecological and evolutionary standpoints.22 341 Chemical defense or communication cannot be properly understood unless it is viewed through the lenses of population, community, and ecosystem processes, and this requires consideration of both the biotic and abiotic components of the natural environment.342 For example, chemically mediated foraging is affected by water flow because it relies on water-soluble cues that are carried away from prey.343 345 Similar constraints likewise modify the effectiveness of other waterborne cues, such as alarm signals, sexual pheromones, and settlement cues, in both mobile and sessile organisms.244 345 350... [Pg.247]
