Dissertations Academic, searches

Research done in an academic setting generally results in a formal publication that appears in the primary literature. The research results contained in dissertations may or may not be published separately. Dissertations are catalogued and placed on the shelves of the student s university. Many universities now have electronic catalogues that allow searching from remote sites. Dissertations are also indexed by commercial organizations (see below). 

After selectively searching through one, several, or all of the tools listing academic dissertations, and exhausting task in itself, one is faced with the problem of obtaining a copy of individual theses which seem of interest. Unfortunately, no library in the United States has a complete file of dissertations from American colleges and universities. It is known that the library of the institution where the degree was earned holds a copy of the dissertation. Occasionally, one may borrow... 

The relative importance of dissertations in chemical literature searches is increasing rapidly because the publication costs of scientific journals are skyrocketing and the volume of research is expanding rapidly, which makes it necessary to publish many more papers in abbreviated form. This also increases the proportion of academic work that appears in obscure publications or remains unpublished. 

For a successful academic career with a strong research component, a post-doctoral fellowship is neariy essential. Start the search at least six months before you defend your doctoral dissertation. If you are not tied to a given location by family concerns, consider going to a new part of the worid. Fi5t and foremost, find a post-doctoral advisor who is both well-respected and altruistic. For potential advisors who are senior faculty, the quality of jobs found by their past post-doctoral fellows is the best single indicator of your probability of success."... 

Where and how should you look for an academic position Just as with your research, your doctoral and postdoctoral advisors will be your closest mentors for your job search, followed by those who were on your dissertation committee. You should review your curriculum vitae, research, teaching, and professional plan with these individuals. They are also likely to be well known in academia, thus providing an indirect boost to your reputation. Additionally, they are likely to have many connections to important players in the field, and to know where the job opportunities lie. They are also likely to have a feel for which universities have programs that are recruiting and growing, improving in reputation, and generating new resources. 

Engineering handbooks (see, e.g., [1]), extensive review articles (see, e.g., [2,7], Weidenbaum [21]), and the monograph by Kaye [5] on solids mixing provide comprehensive information on solids mixers and blenders. Detailed information on individual mixers or classes of mixers can be found in articles in technical and trade journals academic theses and dissertations and commercial publications by the makers of mixers. Many of the technical articles, theses, and dissertations are cited in the extensive reviews mentioned earlier they can also be identified by searching through publications such as Chemical Abstracts and Engineering Indexes.
