Director, definition

Thennotropic liquid crystal phases are fonned by rodlike or disclike molecules. However, in the following we consider orientational ordering of rodlike molecules for definiteness, although the same parameters can be used for discotics. In a liquid crystal phase, the anisotropic molecules tend to point along the same direction. This is known as the director, which is a unit vector denoted n. [Pg.2554]

To be successful, an LSMBS requires a clear definition of the responsibilities of each participating individual or group. Preparation of an organization chart may be appropriate, as would its inclusion in the study protocol. Key study participants could include Study Directors, Principal Investigators in the sample collection and analytical phases, sponsor representatives, technical consultants, residue analytical laboratories, and QA specialists. [Pg.235]

By our definition, the tilt plane is normal to the polarization in the ferroelectric state in the illustration in Figure 8.13 this is a vertical plane normal to the plane of the page. Since there is no tilt of the director projected onto this plane, the phase should be considered a type of SmA. We name this structure SmAPp (an untilted polar smectic the subscript F referring to a ferroelectric structure, in this case a ferroelectric state of an antiferroelectric phase). The antiferroelectric phase is therefore also an SmA denoted SmAPA (the subscript A for antiferroelectric). While this idea is certainly intriguing, no such antiferroelectric has yet been discovered. [Pg.480]

Problem definition Ever since a production plant started using a new supplier of a carbon decolorizing agent, consistently acceptable polymer has not been obtained. The plant s technical director recently read an article about the power of new mass spectrometric techniques, so she sends you an urgent e-mail and sends a sample of the offending carbon and a retained sample of the previous supply. The technical director asks you to find the impurity in the new, ineffective decolorizing carbon. [Pg.843]

Problem definition You are shocked when the plant technical director tells you that her question was not what caused the failures at the plant, but rather how do we ensure consistent output from the plant. ... [Pg.845]

Problem definition The next day the technical director expresses her clear aggravation with you when she tells you that the DA plant finds your answer incorrect. [Pg.845]

The definitions are for those words and phrases that the reader encounters in the regulations. Examples include quality assurance unit, raw data, reference substance, sponsor, study, study director, test substance, test system, testing facility. See Box 7.4 for these definitions. [Pg.59]

The quality assurance unit (QAU) performs the quality assurance audit. This task is ongoing throughout the study and is the reason for the existence of the QAU. The QAU is the person (see definition of "person" in Box 7.4) designated to perform the quality assurance duties. Thus, the QAU inspects the study to assure integrity and that problems are brought to the attention of the study director. This unit also determines if unauthorized deviations from protocols and SOPs occurred and reviews the final report for accuracy. [Pg.71]

The FDA established a GLP review task team to identify provisions in the regulations that could be amended or deleted, and this team recommended revisions to 36 GLP provisions. Recommendations were issued as a proposed rule on October 29, 1984 [15]. The proposal made various changes to definitions to reduce the amount of paperwork required for nonclinical laboratory studies and to clarify earlier GLP provisions. Similar clarifications were made to the provisions, delineating the definition and function of the study director and quality assurance unit. [Pg.29]

Dr. Michael Shermer is the founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, the director of the Skeptics Society, a monthly columnist for Scientific American, and the co-host and producer of the 13-hour Fox Family television series Exploring the Unknown. He is the author of The Science of Good and Evil and Why People Believe WeirdThings. His list with his personal definitions ... [Pg.50]

Starting in about 1978, the Research Directors Committee of the Association began to address the subject. The membership of the committee was polled regarding their views on data retention. This was largely stimulated by proposed EPA guidelines on this matter. I won t attempt to suitmarize the results of that survey, but emerging from it was a consensus definition on the term "raw data," and a consensus statement on retention of saitples. The definition of "raw data" which the industry preferred was as follows ... [Pg.8]

Many of you have expressed an interest in a format for your master schedule. Figure 1 depicts the format Mobay Chemical Corp. uses. It is self explanatory and covers the items required in the GLP regulations (test substance test system nature of study study initiation date current status sponsor identity, if explicable and name of study director). For a contract laboratory, the sponsor s identity must appear on the master schedule sheet for each study listed. There are several terms that require definition. In... [Pg.84]

Victoria Friedensen, National Academy of Engineering I am the director of a project by the National Academy of Engineering, Diversity in the Engineering Workforce. We have done a couple of things to promote, and otherwise encourage, an expanded definition of who is an engineer in this country. [Pg.33]

Karl E. Peace (1987), Director, Research Statistics, SmithKline and French Laboratories, pointed out that it is frequently impossible to design trials to provide definitive information about safety—particularly about adverse events. He described occasions when it has been possible to design adequate safety studies, but concluded, However, for most new drugs in clinical development it is not possible. ... [Pg.355]

Because nematic liquid-crystalline polymers by definition are both anisotropic and polymeric, they show elastic effects of at least two different kinds. They have director gradient elasticity because they are nematic, and they have molecular elasticity because they are polymeric. As discussed in Section 10.2.2, Frank gradient elastic forces are produced when flow creates inhomogeneities or gradients in the continuum director field. Molecular elasticity, on the other hand, is generated when the flow is strong enough to shift the molecular order parameter S = S2 from its equilibrium value 5 . (Microcrystallites, if present, can produce a third type of elasticity see Section 11.3.6.)... [Pg.519]

If we now generalize the definition of director to be the unit vector parallel to the major axis of the order parameter tensor, we find that at vanishingly low shear rates, where the order parameter tensor is nearly uniaxial, this definition reduces to the usual meaning of the term director. ... [Pg.533]

A final dimension of a metric is the intended audience. Information may be disseminated to internal audiences such as employees, supervisors, facility management, senior executives, and the board of directors or to external audiences such as a trade association, regulatory agency, or the general public. Any metric that must be reported for regulatory compliance is, by definition, an external metric. Chapter 6 discusses in greater detail the identification of metrics for various external and internal audiences. [Pg.49]
