Director, definition

Thennotropic liquid crystal phases are fonned by rodlike or disclike molecules. However, in the following we consider orientational ordering of rodlike molecules for definiteness, although the same parameters can be used for discotics. In a liquid crystal phase, the anisotropic molecules tend to point along the same direction. This is known as the director, which is a unit vector denoted n. 

To be successful, an LSMBS requires a clear definition of the responsibilities of each participating individual or group. Preparation of an organization chart may be appropriate, as would its inclusion in the study protocol. Key study participants could include Study Directors, Principal Investigators in the sample collection and analytical phases, sponsor representatives, technical consultants, residue analytical laboratories, and QA specialists. 

By our definition, the tilt plane is normal to the polarization in the ferroelectric state in the illustration in Figure 8.13 this is a vertical plane normal to the plane of the page. Since there is no tilt of the director projected onto this plane, the phase should be considered a type of SmA. We name this structure SmAPp (an untilted polar smectic the subscript F referring to a ferroelectric structure, in this case a ferroelectric state of an antiferroelectric phase). The antiferroelectric phase is therefore also an SmA denoted SmAPA (the subscript A for antiferroelectric). While this idea is certainly intriguing, no such antiferroelectric has yet been discovered.

The definitions are for those words and phrases that the reader encounters in the regulations. Examples include quality assurance unit, raw data, reference substance, sponsor, study, study director, test substance, test system, testing facility. See Box 7.4 for these definitions. 

The quality assurance unit (QAU) performs the quality assurance audit. This task is ongoing throughout the study and is the reason for the existence of the QAU. The QAU is the person (see definition of "person" in Box 7.4) designated to perform the quality assurance duties. Thus, the QAU inspects the study to assure integrity and that problems are brought to the attention of the study director. This unit also determines if unauthorized deviations from protocols and SOPs occurred and reviews the final report for accuracy. 

The FDA established a GLP review task team to identify provisions in the regulations that could be amended or deleted, and this team recommended revisions to 36 GLP provisions. Recommendations were issued as a proposed rule on October 29, 1984 [15]. The proposal made various changes to definitions to reduce the amount of paperwork required for nonclinical laboratory studies and to clarify earlier GLP provisions. Similar clarifications were made to the provisions, delineating the definition and function of the study director and quality assurance unit.

A final dimension of a metric is the intended audience. Information may be disseminated to internal audiences such as employees, supervisors, facility management, senior executives, and the board of directors or to external audiences such as a trade association, regulatory agency, or the general public.
