Direct coal fuel cells

Direct coal fuel cells were also tried, using molten carbonate as the electrolyte [6], However, ash formation, poor conductivity, and technical problems in continuously feeding the fuel made the process impractical and uneconomical. The subsequent successful development of the internal combustion engine, and the... [Pg.3]

Direct Carbon Fuel Cells (DCFC). In direct carbon fuel cells, solid carbon (presumably a fuel derived from coal, pet-coke or biomass) is used directly in the anode, without an intermediate gasification step. Concepts with solid oxide, molten carbonate, and alkaline electrolytes are all under development. The thermodynamics of the reactions in a DCFC allow very high efficiency conversion. Therefore, if the technology can be developed into practical systems, it could ultimately have a significant impact on coal-based power generation. [Pg.28]

MCFC and PAFC would be used as stationary power supply where grid electricity is not available due to geographical constraints, defence application and mobile power pack. PAFC was commercialised (200 kW) by UTC Fuel Cells with approximately 250 installations at subsidized rates. PAFC production was stopped recently because it is not economically viable ( 4500/kW). MCFC is in advanced stage of commercialisation. Fuel is for MCFC synthesis gas and natural gas. On the similar line investigators are working on direct carbon fuel cell which can take coal derived fuel and operates at lower temperature than SOFC. MCFC and PAFC may be a temporary phenomenon in the evolution of fuel cell technology development. [Pg.359]
