2.2- Dimethylpropanol

Content of prime - tertiary peroxide groups was measured by the quantity of products of complete decay, which were measured by chromatography. It is known that the main contents in products of the complete decay of Oct-MA-TBPMM samples are acetone and 2,2-dimethylpropanol, which arise in reactions of chain fragmentation of tert-butylperoxy radical or in reaction of chain transfer of this radical. In this case the sum of acetone and 2,2-dimethylpropanol molecules is equal to the quantity of peroxide groups in polymer. As an internal standard we used chloroform. 

Amyl Alcohol, CjHjjOH, mw 88.15. Eight isomers are known, all of them liquid except 2,2-dimethylpropanol, which is a solid. They are si sol in water and miscible with oils or org solvents, such as ales, esters, ethers, ketones and aromatic hydrocarbons. 

Acid-catalyzed rearrangement of 1,1 -diphenyl-2,2-dimethylpropanol in presence of sulfur trioxide forms a stable 1,2-oxathietane 2,2-dioxide (Scheme 18) (77JCS(P1)247). 

Oxathietane 2,2-dioxides (-sultones) are prepared by [2 + 2] cycloaddition of sulfur trioxide to alkenes (e.g., Scheme 27) . Likewise, acid-catalyzed rearrangement of l,l-diphenyl-2,2-dimethylpropanol in the presence of sulfur trioxide forms a stable 1,2-oxathietane 2,2-dioxide (Scheme 28) < 1977J (Pl)247>. 

The first example of a chiral nucleophilic promoter that is also capable of catalytic turnover was described by Vedejs et al.[8], who showed that acylation of 2a with ACjO in the presence of the C2-symmetric phospholane 6 (2a Ac20 6 = 1 2.5 0.16) gave 4 with ee = 34 % (44 % conversion,, v = 2.7, s = fas/ siow) while racemic 1 -phenyl-2,2-dimethylpropanol was acylated with m-chlorobenzoic anhydride under the same reaction conditions to yield the corresponding ester 7 with ee = 81 % (25 % conversion, 5=12-15). In a continuation of these studies the bicyclic phosphine 8 was prepared and evaluated (Scheme 2) [9]. It was found that 8 is an efficient catalyst for the resolution... 

Amyl alcohols occur in eight isomeric forms and have the empirical formula CjHnOH. All are liquids at ambient conditions except 2,2-dimethylpropanol (neopentyl alcohol), which is a solid. Almost all amyl alcohols are manufactured in the United States by the hydroformylation of butylenes. Yeast fermentation processes for ethanol yield small amounts of 4-methyl-l-butanol (isoamyl alcohol) and 2-methyl-1-butanol (active amyl alcohol, scc-butyl-carbinol) as fusel oil. However, when the amino acids leucine and isoleucine are added to sugar fermentations by yeast, 87% and 80% yields of 4-methyl-l-butanol and 2-methyl-l-butanol, respectively, are obtained (Fieser and Fieser, 1950). These reactions are not suitable for commercial applications because of cost, but they do indicate the close structural relationship between these C5 amino acids and the C5 alcohols. The reactions occur under nitrogen-deficient conditions. If a nitrogen source is readily available, the production of the alcohols is lowered considerably.
