The other major source for student acquisition of PDF files is the primary literature in the form of journals. The modern electronic journal functions in much the same way as a content management system. Retrieval of individual articles has been vastly expedited by the recent introduction of the widely implemented digital-object-identifier (DOI) [4]. This provides 1-click access by means of a hyperlink embedded directly in other documents, or from e.g. the navigation tree of a HTML-based Web document. One flaw of this scheme is that identical documents served from multiple sites have different URLs. Also, URLs leading to the same document can become different if the server host has more than one name, or file system links are modifying the directory structure of the server. An alternative to the URL scheme called URN (uniform resource names ) is currently being discussed. A URN is an unique identifier of a document similar to an ISBN number, making copies and different versions of documents identifiable.
