Plasticizers diester

The packaging material must not interact with the product either to adsorb substances from the product or to leach chemicals into the product. Plastics contain additives to enhance polymer performance. PVC may contain phthalate diester plasticizer, which can leach into infusion fluids from packaging. Antimicrobial preservatives such as phenylmercuric acetate are known to partition into rubbers and plastics during storage, thus reducing the formulation concentration below effective antimicrobial levels. [Pg.178]

Various other processes not discussed here lead to mamrfacture of acids required for production of plasticizers. As previously mentioned, availability and price of acid rrray predetermine price and thus the likelihood of a plasticizer s itse. Acids are used not orrly in their pure forms but also in form of rrrixtures. For example DBE intermediates manrrfac-tured by DuPont are refined dimethyl esters of adipic, glutaric, and succinic acid are rrrix-tures for plasticizer synthesis. There are six mixtures of different composition which may be used for the production of polyester and diester plasticizers. Diester plasticizers are produced by transesterification according to the following equation ... [Pg.61]

Polymers of average polarity are compatible with liquids of an average polarity. For instance, polymethylmetacrylate and polyvinylchloride are not compatible with water and hydrocarbon oils but they are compatible with some diester plasticizers (sebacates, phtha-lates). An increase in carbon number in diester plasticizers reduces compatibility, water solubility, and improves oil solubility. ... [Pg.126]

Ethylhexyl decyl phthalate n. A mixed diester plasticizer for cellulosics, polystyrene, PVC, and polyvinyl acetate. [Pg.378]

ATM—avoid thinking that the higher the molecular weight, the better. The best choice is a highly polar diester plasticizer with higher than normal MW for its class and low viscosity (preferably <40 cps). [Pg.404]

The diisobutyrate ester of trimethylpentanediol is an economical, low color primary plasticizer for use ia surface coatings, vinyl flooring, moldings, and other vinyl products. This diester is commercially available from Eastman as Kodaflex TXIB plasticizer (49). [Pg.374]

Various other diesters, mixed esters, and polyesters of trimethylpentanediol are useful as monomeric or polymeric plasticizers for coatings and plastic film and sheeting (49). They are compatible with, and useful ia, ceUulosics, vinyls, polystyrenes, and some other plastics. [Pg.374]

Diesters. Diesters prepared from the diol and monocarboxyhc acids are useful as antioxidants (qv) for polypropylene (98), and as plasticizers... [Pg.374]

Uses. Phthabc anhydride is used mainly in plasticizers, unsaturated polyesters, and alkyd resins (qv). PhthaUc plasticizers consume 54% of the phthahc anhydride in the United States (33). The plasticizers (qv) are used mainly with poly(vinyl chloride) to produce flexible sheet such as wallpaper and upholstery fabric from normally rigid polymers. The plasticizers are of two types diesters of the same monohydric alcohol such as dibutyl phthalate, or mixed esters of two monohydric alcohols. The largest-volume plasticizer is di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate [117-81-7] which is known commercially as dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and is the base to which other plasticizers are compared. The important phthahc acid esters and thek physical properties are Hsted in Table 12. The demand for phthahc acid in plasticizers is naturally tied to the growth of the flexible poly(vinyl chloride) market which is large and has been growing steadily. [Pg.485]

The product is a mistuie of various polyoxyethylene chain lengths (29—31). Glycol diesters ate used as vinyl plasticizers the monoesters as surface-active agents and viscosity modifiers for alkyd resins (qv). [Pg.84]

Diesters. Many of the diester derivatives are commercially important. The diesters are important plasticizers, polymer intermediates, and synthetic lubricants. The diesters of azelaic and sebacic acids are useflil as monomeric plasticizing agents these perform weU at low temperatures and are less water-soluble and less volatile than are diesters of adipic acid. Azelate diesters, eg, di- -hexyl, di(2-ethylhexyl), and dibutyl, are useflil plasticizing agents for poly(vinyl chloride), synthetic mbbers, nitroceUulose, and other derivatized ceUuloses (104). The di-hexyl azelates and dibutyl sebacate are sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Dmg Administration for use in poly(vinyl chloride) films and in other plastics with direct contact to food. The di(2-ethylhexyl) and dibenzyl sebacates are also valuable plasticizers. Monomeric plasticizers have also been prepared from other diacids, notably dodecanedioic, brassyflc, and 8-eth5lhexadecanedioic (88), but these have not enjoyed the commercialization of the sebacic and azelaic diesters. [Pg.64]

Plasticised amorphous thermoplastics Certain plastics may be mixed with high-boiling low-volatility liquids to give products of lower T. The most important example occurs with p.v.c. which is often mixed with liquids such as di-iso-octyl phthalate, tritolyl phosphate or other diesters to bring the below room temperature. The resultant plasticised p.v.c. is flexible and to some degree quite rubbery. Other commonly plasticised materials are cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate. [Pg.919]

One of the most important sulfosuccinates of the diester type is diisooctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS). It has found a widespread use in pharmaceutics, industry, and as auxiliary for plastic packagings, etc., in contact with foods as well as in some foodstuffs. [Pg.531]

Polyethers with a methylenephosphonic acid diester group, e.g., from diols with epoxypropanephosphonic acid diesters, are used in the production of plastics as flame-resistant conditioning [150]. [Pg.583]

Their hydrophobicity and their plasticity were appreciated and used for a long time in a wide range of activities. To our knowledge, the first wax to have been exploited is beeswax. Beeswax is produced by various species of bees in the world, and it has a melting point between 62°C and 64°C. It mainly contains homologous series of even-numbered fatty acids (C22 C34, C2 being the predominat compound), odd-numbered ra-alkanes (C2i C33, C27 being the major compound) and even-numbered palmitic esters from C40 to C52 (Tulloch and Hoffman, 1972 Kolattukudy, 1976). Hydroxy esters, diesters and hydroxy diesters also form part of beeswax to a lesser extent. [Pg.99]

Whereas there are relatively few phosphoric acid diesters of medicinal or toxicological interest, phosphoric acid triesters are of greater significance. Such compounds occur mainly as prodrugs, as discussed in the present section, or plasticizers and insecticides (see next section). [Pg.573]

The plasticizer-range alcohols are largely used as feedstock for production of high molecular weight diesters of phthalic, adipic, azelaic, and sulftiric acids. All these are used primarily in plasticizers for polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and other plastics. The plastics industry also uses them as additives for heat stabilization, to control the viscosity of PVC plastisols, ultraviolet absorbers, flame retardants, and antioxidants. They are also found in synthetic, lubricants, agricultural chemicals, and defoamers. [Pg.221]

The chemistry of polycarbonates is similar to the chemical behavior of polyesters. We can think of a carbonate as being a diester of carbonic acid, H2CO3, which is unstable itself. Polycarbonate is a strong, clear plastic used in automobiles (25%), glazing and sheet (20%), optical media (15%), appliances (8%), computers (7%), medical industry (7%), and recreation and... [Pg.261]

The isolated dimethyl sebacate can be sold commercially as is or optionally hydrolyzed to sebacic acid. If a higher molecular weight plasticizer diester is required, a transesterification with -ethyl hexanol, for example, gives the desired product plus two equivalents of methanol which is recycled back to the oxycarbonylation reaction. If the free acid is desired, dimethyl sebacate hydrolysis to sebacic acid is carried out using a strong mineral acid such as sulfuric acid. Hydrolysis is nearly quantitative with a selectivity of about 99.5% to diacid and. 5% to the half-ester acid product. Additional recrystallization is used to improve purity if required. [Pg.93]

Plasticizers represent a large family. There are 300 different plasticizers known, of which one hundred are commercially produced—liquid and solid, monomeric, and polymeric. Plasticizers are generally grouped into phthalates, phosphates, low temperature diesters, polymeric or permanent plasticizers, epoxides, and others. [Pg.6]

Isosorbide, an l,4 3,6-dianhydrohexitol, is readily obtained from the double dehydration of sorbitol. Amongst other chemical derivatives, diesters and diethers of sorbitol have already found application as solvents or plasticizers. Functionalization of the two alcohols groups attached to the rather rigid V-shaped framework of the two... [Pg.77]
