Introduction and Commercial Application This section provides an overview of the activities carried out at the various stages of field development. Each activity is driven by a business need related to that particular phase. The later sections of this manual will focus in some more detail on individual elements of the field life cycle. [Pg.3]

Having defined and gathered data adequate for an initial reserves estimation, the next step is to look at the various options to develop the field. The objective of the feasibility study is to document various technical options, of which at least one should be economically viable. The study will contain the subsurface development options, the process design, equipment sizes, the proposed locations (e.g. offshore platforms), and the crude evacuation and export system. The history of EM (for an overview see table Bl.17,1) can be interpreted as the development of two concepts the electron beam either illuminates a large area of tire sample ( flood-beam illumination , as in the typical transmission electron microscope (TEM) imaging using a spread-out beam) or just one point, i.e. focused to the smallest spot possible, which is then scaimed across the sample (scaiming transmission electron microscopy (STEM) or scaiming electron microscopy (SEM)). Many methods have been developed to detemrine surface structure we have mentioned several in the previous section and there are many more. To get an idea of their relative usage and importance, we here examine historical statistics. We also review the kinds of surface structure drat have been studied to date, which gives a feeling for the kinds of surface structures tliat current methods and technology can most easily solve. For larger systems, various approximate schemes have been developed, called mixed methods as they treat parts of the system using different levels of theory. Of interest to us here are quantuin-seiniclassical methods, which use full quantum mechanics to treat the electrons, but use approximations based on trajectories in a classical phase space to describe the nuclear motion. The prefix quantum may be dropped, and we will talk of seiniclassical methods. There are a number of different approaches, but here we shall concentrate on the few that are suitable for direct dynamics molecular simulations.
