Design notation

A good design notation makes it easy to highlight the issues you care about at the moment, leaving other issues until later. Just as important, it gives you a well-defined way of combining different issues when it s time to implement the design. [Pg.212]

It is during discussions that many people gain their first real appreciation of the value of design notations, but much of the way you use it at a whiteboard or in presentations follows from how you use it in documentation. The rest of this chapter will concentrate on the latter. [Pg.212]

As with bubble cap flood, sieve tray flood is the ratio of the Vload design (notated here as VN) to the maximum Vload of sieve trays. The Vload (notated here as VM) for sieve trays is factored by surface tension and by the actual cubic feet per second throughflow. [Pg.104]

A code walk-through is an informal analysis of code as a cooperative, organized activity by several participants. The participants select some test cases (the selection could have been done previously by a single participant) and simulate execution of the code by hand, walking through the code or through any design notation. [Pg.304]

Four types of racked structure were achieved by using a single design notation lhat is shown in Fig. 7.23. The different racked structures were achieved by racking one set of needle bed (back) by 0,4,6, and 8 positions on each side. The ANOVA analysis on racked structure, irrespective of number of racks, statistically proves that the racked structure increased the average slash resistance values to be over the slash resistance standard pass criteria (Table 7.8). [Pg.228]

B5.2 S/W Design Methods and Notation There is a plethora of S/W design methods and notation described by the S/W literature. Jackson (1988), although somewhat outdated now, identified a nonexhaustive list of design notations and their relationship to stages in the S/W design process. [Pg.289]

Research programs around the world are continually developing new and refined design notations to address limitations in existing notations for application in a specific domain, or for application across domains. Therefore it is not possible to provide a list of all design notations and methods out there. [Pg.291]

It is common place for several design notations to be chosen, each with the purpose of modelling, analysing and refining the behaviours of the system with respect to a specific design perspective. The totality of these design notations (and associated results) provides completeness in design perspectives. [Pg.291]

Verifiable Results of a combination of analysis techniques and reviews/ inspections, including structured design walkthroughs and inspections against the design notation standard verifiability criteria formal method proofs that show determinism verification results of the architectural element (note some developers and certification authorities adopt the approach that if the architectural element was verified, this implies it is verifiable) - the limitation with this approach is that the inference is made via an assumption about the extensiveness of verification (and is implicit), rather than specific evidence in this regard. [Pg.293]

Functional properties ( Arguments and evidence should be available that show (a) The source code contains a correct implementation of the functional properties of the software safety requirement, either directly or by means of intermediate design notations or stages. This includes those functional properties that have been derived from non-functional software safety requirements, (b) All parameters and constants used in conjunction with the software system have been checked for correctness and internal consistency. ),... [Pg.174]

The e (2 X 2) unit eell ean also be written as (a/2 x V2)i 45°. Here, the original unit veetors of the (1 x i) stnieture have both been stretehed by faetors V2 and then rotated by 45°. Thus, sulfiir on Ni (100) fonus an ordered half-monolayer stnieture that ean be labelled as Ni (100) -i- e (2x 2) -S or, equivalently, Ni (100) -i-(V2 X V2) i 45°-S. The e (2 x 2) notation is elearly easier to write and also easier to eonvert into a geometrieal model of the stnieture, and henee is the favoured designation. [Pg.1763]

Most calculations today are done by choosing an existing segmented GTO basis set. These basis sets are identihed by one of a number of notation schemes. These abbreviations are often used as the designator for the basis set in the input to ah initio computational chemistry programs. The following is a look at the notation for identifying some commonly available contracted GTO basis sets. [Pg.81]

Double bonds m the mam chain are signaled by the ending enow acid and their position IS designated by a numerical prefix Entries 6 and 7 are representative carboxylic acids that contain double bonds Double bond stereochemistry is specified by using either the cis-trans or the E-Z notation... [Pg.793]

Shorthand notations have been developed to avoid repetitive systematic names of unsaturated fatty acids. Eor example, linolenic or (7j -9,i7j -12-,i7j -15-octadecatrienoic acid can be represented by 18 3(9, 12, 15 ). The Greek letter A has been used to indicate presence and position of double bonds, eg a fatty acid, but it should never be used in a systematic name. An equally inappropriate but popular designation is derived by counting... [Pg.82]

When two or more gases are absorbed in systems involving chemical reac tions, the situation is much more complex. This topic is discussed later in the subsection Absorption with Chemical Reac tion. Graphical Design Method for Dilute Systems The following notation for multicomponent absorption calculations has been adapted from Sherwood, Pigford, and Wilke (Mass Transfer, McGraw-Hill, New York 1975, p. 415) ... [Pg.1362]

The original work by NACA and NASA is the basis on which most modern axial-flow compressors are designed. Under NACA, a large number of blade profiles were tested. The test data on these blade profiles is published. The cascade data conducted by NACA is the most extensive work of its kind. In most commercial axial-flow compressors NACA 65 series blades are used. These blades are usually specified by notation similar to the following 65-(18) 10. This notation means that the blade has a lift coefficient of 1.8, a profile shape 65, and a thickness/chord ratio of 10%. The lift coefficient can be directly related to the blade camber angle by the following relationship for 65 series blades ... [Pg.279]

Skin" Notation-. The designation "skin" refers to the potential contribution to the overall exposure by the cutaneous route, including mucous membranes and eyes, either by airborne, or more particularly by direct, contact with the substance. Examples of such substances are phenol (cresol and cumene), hydrogen cyanide, and mercury. The "skin" notation is intended to make known the need to prevent cutaneous absorption so that the TLV is not violated. [Pg.258]

Uranium in the fuel of a nuclear power plant is designated U. The 92 protons and 143 neutrons in a U nucleus sum to 235, the number in the U notation. Through interaction with a neutron the 92 protons and 144 neutrons involved are rearranged into other nuclei. Typically, this rearrangement is depicted as... [Pg.285]
