Dermatan sulfate-protein

Although it has long been know n that demiatan sulfate is covalently linked to protein in the tissues, the actual isolation of the protein polysaccharide has only recently been accomplished (Toole and fjowthcr, 1965, 1966, 1968). The dermatan sulfate-protein has a rather high protein content, approximately 50%, and is smaller than most of the chondroitin sulfate-protein complexes, wdth a molecular weight of approximately 100,000-200,000. 

CS-PG, chondroitin sulfate-proteoglycan these are similar to the dermatan sulfate PGs (DS-PGs) of cartilage ffable 48-11). SPARC, secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine. 

The core proteins of DS-PG I and DS-PG II are homologous to those of CS-PG I and CS-PG II found In bone (Table 48-9). A possible explanation Is that osteoblasts lack the epimerase required to convert glucuronic acid to Iduronic acid, the latter of which Is found In dermatan sulfate.

The hyaluronan content of skin has been estimated to be between 0.03% and 0.09%, and dermatan sulfate represents 30 to 40% of dermal proteoglycans. The GAG content is reported to decrease with respect to the amount of protein with increased age, and a recent report suggests that there is a decrease in the proportion of versican and an increase in decorin with increased age, which is associated with the appearance of a small PG that may be a catabolic fragment of decorin.
