The depressed prices of most metals in world markets in the 1980s and early 1990s have slowed the development of new metal extraction processes, although the search for improved extractants continues. There is a growing interest in the use of extraction for recovery of metals from effluent streams, for example the wastes from pickling plants and electroplating (qv) plants (276). Recovery of metals from Hquid effluent has been reviewed (277), and an AM-MAR concept for metal waste recovery has recentiy been reported (278). Possible appHcations exist in this area for Hquid membrane extraction (88) as weU as conventional extraction. Other schemes proposed for effluent treatment are a wetted fiber extraction process (279) and the use of two-phase aqueous extraction (280). 

Figure 13.4 illustrates some of the factors known to be involved in the development of AD many of the known and putative links between factors are also shown. It should also be noted that the patterns of inter-factor modulation may be either positive or negative. However, it is clear that no single factor or combination of factors can explain all AD cases. It is best to conceptually model AD as a broad end point that can be reached in numerous ways. Similar multi-factorial models have been proposed for schizophrenia and depression (Chapters 11 and 12) and almost certainly underlie every other complex psychobiological concept.

Melatonin receptor agonists and their relevance for the treatment of sleep disorders and major depression have been previously reviewed in Ann. Rep. Med. Chem., volume 39 [29]. Since then, ramelteon has been approved, representing an important milestone for the proof of concept of this target, and has opened new possibilities for research. 

Impure substances have melting points that are very dependent upon the amount of impurity present. For a few substances this is quantified as the molal freezing point depression constant. The result is that melting points can be a very useful indicator of purification efforts. As long as each purification step in a process results in a higher melting point, the substance has been made more pure. This same concept allows the quality control chemist to have a very sensitive method for detecting impurities that is lower than anticipated. 

The term "bipolar disorder" originally referred to manic-depressive illnesses characterized by both manic and depressive episodes. In recent years, the concept of bipolar disorder has been broadened to include subtypes with similar clinical courses, phenomenology, family histories and treatment responses. These subtypes are thought to form a continuum of disorders that, while differing in severity, are related. Readers are referred to the Diagnostic and Statisticial Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-IV) for details of this classification. 

An immunologic basis for chronic beryllium disease has been postulated and a hypersensitivity phenomenon demonstrated.
