Coal is expected to be the best domestic feedstock alternative to natural gas. Although coal-based ammonia plants have been built elsewhere, there is no such plant in the United States. Pilot-scale projects have demonstrated effective ammonia-from-coal technology (102). The cost of ammonia production can be anticipated to increase, lea ding to increases in the cost of producing nitrogen fertilizers. [Pg.243]

Not all of the gas is wasted. About 300 MW of electricity is generated from landfills. A variety of electric generation systems have been employed by a small number of developers. Most projects use simple technology and are small (2—10 MW). However, an EPRI study has estimated that landfill gas resources in the United States could support 6,000 MW of generation if utilized in 2-MW-sized carbonate fuel cells. Constmction on the world s first utihty-scale direct carbonate fuel cell demonstration was begun in California. If successful, EPRI estimates that precommercial 3-MW plants based on this design could become available by the end of this decade at an installed cost of 17,000/kW. [Pg.109]

Biofixation of C02 by microalgae, especially as an option for the utilisation of flue gases from power plants, has been the subject of extensive investigations in the United States, Japan and Europe (IEA-GHG Biofixation Network). However, none of the related projects have demonstrated the feasibility of the concept at a pre-industrial level. What is more, C02 fixation efficiency is quite low because of the photobioreactors used in those pilot plants (raceway or open-ponds) (Figure 17). [Pg.105]

Information on the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Fuel Cell Demonstration was taken from the following web site www.dodfuelcell.com. Finally, Fuel Cell Energy, IFC, and Siemens Westinghouse provided information on their field sites. The IFC PAFC summary includes a number of projects reported by DoD. In the DoD demonstration program, a total of 30 PAFC units were installed at DoD sites across the United States. These were model B and C PC-25 units. [Pg.338]

It has been demonstrated that red oak OSL could be used to replace 35% to 40% of the phenol (or phenolic resin solids) in phenol-formaldehyde resins used to laminate maple wood and to bond southern pine flake boards (wafer-board and/or strandboard) without adversely affecting the physical bond properties. While this pulping process and by-product lignin do not commercially exist at this time in the United States, lignins from such processes are projected to cost 40% to 50% less than phenol as a polymer raw material. [Pg.333]

The United States Navy has been concerned for some time with protecting its military and civilian personnel from reproductive and developmental hazards in the workplace. As part of its efforts to reduce or eliminate exposure of Naval personnel and their families to reproductive and developmental toxicants, the Navy requested that the National Research Council (NRC) recommend an approach that can be used to evaluate chemicals and physical agents for their potential to cause reproductive and developmental toxicity. The NRC assigned this project to the Committee on Toxicology, which convened the Subcommittee on Reproductive and Developmental Toxicology, to prepare this report. In this report, the subcommittee recommends an approach for evaluating agents for potential reproductive and developmental toxicity and demonstrates how that approach can be used by the Navy. [Pg.16]

AD affects more than four million people in the United States and prevalence studies demonstrate an exponential rise of dementia linked to advancing age (Katzman, 2001). The number of cases of dementia in the developed world is projected to rise from 13.5 million in 2000 to 21.2 million in 2025, and to 36.7 million in 2050 (Katzman and Fox, 1999). Currently the number of deaths caused by AD is similar to the number of deaths caused by stroke. AD and stroke together rank as the third most common causes of death (Ewbank, 1999). [Pg.344]
