By the correct selection of polymer type, the method of manufacture and addition of chemicals that slow down the polymer degradation, manufactured articles can be produced that have suitable processing and end-user physical properties such as tensile strength and avoidance of embrittlement. [Pg.141]

The rate at which the catalyst is lost or degrades has a major influence on the design. If degradation is rapid, the catalyst needs to be regenerated or replaced on a continuous basis. In addition to the cost implications, there are also environmental implications, since the lost or degraded catalyst represents waste. Prepared feeds are marketed in various forms from very fine particles through cmmbles, flakes, and pellets. Pelleted rations may be hard, semimoist, or moist. Hard pellets typically contain less than 10% water and can be stored under cool, dry conditions for at least 90 days without deterioration of quahty. Semimoist pellets are chemically stabilized to protect them from degradation and mold if they are properly stored, while moist pellets must be frozen if they are not used immediately after manufacture. Antibiotics. Solvent extraction is an important step in the recovery of many antibiotics (qv) such as penicillin [1406-05-9] streptomycin [57-92-17, novobiocin [303-81-1J, bacitracin [1405-87-4] erythromycin, and the cephalosporins. A good example is in the manufacture of penicillin (242) by a batchwise fermentation. Amyl acetate [628-63-7] or -butyl acetate [123-86-4] is used as the extraction solvent for the filtered fermentation broth. The penicillin is first extracted into the solvent from the broth at pH 2.0 to 2.5 and the extract treated with a buffet solution (pH 6) to obtain a penicillin-rich solution. Then the pH is again lowered and the penicillin is re-extracted into the solvent to yield a pure concentrated solution. Because penicillin degrades rapidly at low pH, it is necessary to perform the initial extraction as rapidly as possible for this reason centrifugal extractors are generally used. [Pg.79]

Synthetic fluids are safe, noncorrosive, essentially nontoxic, and thermally stable when operated under conditions recommended by the manufacturers. Generally, these fluids are more expensive than petroleum oils, but the synthetics can usually be reprocessed to remove degradation products. There are several classes of chemicals offered permitting a wide temperature range of appHcation. Any heat-transfer fluid in use should be examined periodically to monitor degradation or contamination. [Pg.504]

Ucon HTF-500. Union Carbide Corp. manufactures Ucon HTE-500, a polyalkylene glycol suitable for Hquid-phase heat transfer. The fluid exhibits good thermal stabHity in the recommended temperature range and is inhibited against oxidation. The products of decomposition are soluble and viscosity increases as decomposition proceeds. The vapor pressure of the fluid is negligible and it is not feasible to recover the used fluid by distiHation. Also, because the degradation products are soluble in the fluid, it is not possible to remove them by filtration any spent fluid usuaHy must be burned as fuel or discarded. The manufacture of hydrated lime proceeds by the slow addition of water to cmshed or ground quicklime in a premixing chamber or a vessel known as a hydrator, both of which mix and agitate the lime and water. The amount of water added is critical. Too much water makes it impossible, or too cosdy, to produce the desired dry form too Httle water leaves hydration incomplete, causing degraded quaUty, namely, chemical instabiUty and stmctural unsoundness. [Pg.173]

These also estabhsh limits of acceptabiUty for impurities and degradation compounds, when present, and determine acceptable storage conditions for raw materials and the manufactured products.
