Decorating Coating Systems

Very few thermoplastic resins are used for metal decorating applications. The major exception is poly vinyl chloride and modified PVC s which are used in vinyl solutions, organosols and plastisols. Consult the thermoset metal coating section in the next chapter.

Lacquer coating (decorative coating) The topcoat that is used to give abrasion and corrosion resistance, color, and texture to a decorative coating system. The lacquer is typically applied over a reflective aluminum film deposited by vacuum evaporation and may be deposited on a flow-coated basecoat, which creates a smooth surface. Both functional and decorative coatings can be appHed to paper from latices. The aqueous dispersions can be used on conventional paper converting machinery which usually cannot handle hot melts and solvent coatings. The lack of fire hazard because of absence of solvents is an added advantage of the latex system. 

Decorative coatings of nickel plus chromium are cathodic to steel or zinc alloy substrates and with these protective systems deliberate use may be made of discontinuities in the chromium topcoat where corrosion of the underlying nickel will occur. If the number of these discontinuities in the chromium layer is greatly increased the current density at each individual corrosion site is reduced, penetration of corrosion through the thickness of the nickel layer is thus slowed down and the period of protection of the substrate metal is prolonged.

Emulsion polymers (latexes) are the most commonly used film formers in the coating industry this is particularly the case with aqueous emulsion paints that are used for home decoration. These aqueous emulsion paints are applied at room temperature, when the latexes coalesce on the substrate to form a thermoplastic film. Occasionally, functional polymers are used for crossUnkirig in the coating system. The polymer particles are typically in the submicron range (0.1-0.5 pm). 

Probably the most extensive coatings employed in electrochemical systems are passive films that are formed on metal and semiconductor surfaces (21,22). These anodic films are responsible for the corrosion resistance of reactive metals, such as Fe, Cr, Ni, Ti, Zr, Zn, Cu, Sn, and Al, among others, in aqueous environments as well as for the operation of various electrochemical devices (e.g., electrolytic capacitors). The main disadvantage of phenolic resins is their intrinsic yellow to brown color. As a result they cannot be used for colored and white paints. They can only be used for decorative coatings in a few cases (e.g., gold lacquers). Phenolic resins have favourable mechanical properties and a high chemical resistance. Paint systems that are optimally adjusted to the requirement profile can be developed by suitable formulations.
